Ive been shooting 429421 bullets i made out of striaght wheel weights in 44 special flattop. Im using 7.5 of unique and after only 5-6 shots i have leading at the forcing cone. If i keep shoot it gets worse but mostly in the first 1/2 in of barrel. Any suggestions!?

What size is the bullet? What size are the cylinder throats?

Also, and I know many won't believe me, maybe try changing powders. 2400 seems to not lead forcing cones for me when Unique sometimes did.
Could also be that the cone is rough or off center a bit. Both conditions are somewhat common in the Rugers I have checked.

Well the forcing cone has been reamed but it did about the same before that job. Cilinder throats are .431 and barrel slugged .430 to my knowledge that combination supposed to work. Readings where took with micrometer and pin gages. Also a snug fitting pin gage will slide all the way through the barrel. So i dont think its thread choke.

Try to recover a bullet. Look and see if the rifling is sharp or if it's smeared. May indicate if the bullets are too soft.
Also, measure the rear band of the bullet. If it's smaller than the rest, you probably have gas leaking around the rear of the bullet causing erosion.

That's a really good idea too encore. Even before you fire a round, pull a loaded bullet and check diameter too, could be the same issue, sized smaller by the brass.

Thanks everyone. ive pulled my hair out with this leading. I thought i Finely had every thing right. Im gonna keep trying.
Ok if i do find a bullet and the rear is smaller what do i do to stop it. Im also gonna try 2400 powder but cant find any locally

The rear band will be the same size as the other bands if the mold is made properly. If the recovered (fired) bullet has a smaller rear band, it's a sign gases are melting it away. The melted lead will deposit as the bullet enters the barrel.
The Colts had problems with this due to the oversized throats allowing hot gases to overtake the bullets. An oversized forcing cone can cause the same issue to a lesser degree.

Bobcat if my finding happen to be that the rear band is smaller in a fired bullet what do i do to fix it?
I think what you are saying is what the problem could be gases leaking by the bullet. Should i shoot a softer bullet to fix this or harder or neither?
I have shot the wfn gas check 260gr.made by beartooth With no leading what so ever they fit snug in the Cinlinder but for the life of me i cant find a accurate load for this bullet at all. I dont have anyway to check the hardness of my bullets but im pretty sure these wfn bullets are harder than my homemade keiths.

I've read and re-read this thread and maybe missed what size the bullets are? Will they drop or push thru the cylinder throats?
