It has been a long time since I have been able to look at the forum due to life events and just not having the time. I'm still very busy, but hopefully I will be able to drop by a little more often. I just wanted to share what's up with me in case anyone cares... After having moved away 25 years ago, my wife and I have moved back to Alabama. I was fortunate to have accepted an employment opportunity in Huntsville. We hope this is our final resting place for retirement and beyond. We bought about 10 acres of bluff property overlooking Guntersville Lake and are in the process of building our home. It is exciting to be back to the state where I grew up from age 9 and where I met my sweetheart. Here's a couple of pics of our property - the pics don't do justice to how gorgeous it really is. Many trees have been taken down to allow for the view of the lake. Most of it was hand cleared due to the rocks and steepness of the property which didn't allow access for the use of heavy equipment. We have a lot work to do to clean up the downed timber below the rocks - there's a future shooting range hiding somewhere down there. Before clearing... Partially cleared...

Kraig, good to see you posting! Life does have a way of rearranging things sometimes. It looks like a beautiful view from the property. I guess I never figures AL to have hills like that but that is very pretty.

Hills? Alabama? The North East corner? Appalachians? Yes! I'd have never believed it until I drove from Huntsville to Chattanooga...

Pretty country, I’ve got a buddy that lives outside of Huntsville, he’s got a range on his property too.

Thanks all. We are looking forward to the getting in the house so we can get on with life. It's hard when nearly everything you own is in storage. Moving is not fun!
As others have mentioned, NE Alabama is very hilly and beautiful - not to mention that Guntersville Lake is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country...

Kraig, wondered where you had been. One of my sons' lived in Huntsville for a while & when we visited we were quite surprised by the steep hills & the heavy timber. We drove out to a lake somewhere one day & it was beautiful, not sure if it was the same lake but sure was pretty. Also I remember some sort of rocket or missle facility there, maybe a museum? Looking forward to seeing your shooting range!!

Hey Dick, I tried to get my better half to move to Soda Springs... If it weren't for the snow and we were retired, I could probably make it happen. Who knows, maybe we will hit the lotto and be able to get a second home someday. There's a couple of really pretty lakes around. If you drove 45min east out of Huntsville, you probably went to Guntersville Lake. Yes, the rocket is a landmark in Huntsville. Marshall Space Flight Center is based on the Redstone Arsenal, so there is a heavy NASA presence. The rocket is at the US Space and Rocket Center. I remember going there when I was a kid - they had Miss Baker living there (a squirrel monkey that was used in the cone of a rocket and shot into space in 1959). It's a pretty cool place to visit.

I live here in the HSV area and really enjoy it. I moved down 7 years ago from Detroit and haven't regretted it once. Beautiful scenery, booming economy and i don't have to shovel snow anymore! The TN river system is excellent fishing and I get to do quite a bit of handgun hunting when life allows me to get out.

It has been a long 7 months since I created this thread... I thought I would post an update if anyone cares. Since we purchased the land and had it mostly cleared, we settled on a carriage house plan (garage with an apartment above) and started construction on it. The idea is that we will live in the carriage house until we settle on a house plan suitable to take us to retirement and beyond. Or maybe we will find that the carriage house is adequate and make provisions to make it more accessible without climbing so many stairs. Regardless, this is where I plan to be until the Good Lord calls me home (selfishly, hopefully me before my sweetie). It has taken what seems to be forever to get to this point, but we are at the final stages before it is ready to occupy - hopefully within 4-6 weeks. We also purchased the adjacent 4.5 acres which gives us a total of 10 acres and I have access to another 20-30 acres to hunt on. It's not really hunting when you can step out your back door and shoot a deer, but I have seen some big deer and sign around the property, so I'm sure I'll get into the woods and see what I can scare up. I feel extremely blessed to have found this property and be in a position to close the deal - if we had waited one day more we would have lost it as the surrounding property was bought up in a hurry.
I am grateful for all that I have been blessed with - health, family and friends (online and otherwise) - especially at this time of year when I take more time to reflect. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Blessed New Year!
As it sits today: View off the upstairs deck There's a big boy around...
