This last statement by Max is spot on. All the six gun power in the world won't do you any good if you can't handle it in a hunting situation. Maximum loads in a 44 or a 45 mean nothing if you can't place your shots. Even top end loads with heavy bullets in the 41 magnum can take great concentration to master. If you look at some of Paco Kelly's heavy 41 magnum loads using Accurate #9 powder (pressure tested) you will have to read it twice to believe it. But again horsepower comes at a cost, recoil. If you can handle it you are always ahead of the game with good bullets, but try to run with the big boys & get yourself over gunned & it will take you weeks or months to work your way out of a flinch. Also what Max said about the 480 is spot on, it's such a great cartridge with correct hand loads. You have to run peak pressures in a 475 to really separate it from the 480. Good shooting to all.

I'll never stand over as much big dead things as the last two guys to post, so AMEN ! Why there are 2 480's here. I don't feel the need or ability to master more.

A 480 isnt the most effective big bore ive used, but........it is very very effective and, imho, the king of the big bored that dont beat up the shooter. I havent been able to lod the 480 to abusive levels. Its a great cartridge and heads and shoulders above the 44 mag and 45 colt as they need to be reloaded to very abusive levels to come close to the 480.

But you can't get an A-Frame in .480. Dan

Are you saying they don't make a Swift A Frame bullet for the 475/480 calibers?? I didn't know that, but I don't buy jacketed bullets.

But you can get a solid copper 330gr Lehigh WFN, Also Speer 325 SP with a decent flat point. Seem to recall somebody here has used them on elk ? Have some of the Speer 275gr HP's here, haven't quite figured out what for.. if you CCW your Alaskan, a fight stopper ? Thru the slats deer bullet ?

I used a Speer 325 on a PA Black bear, got complete pass through never recovered the bullet. 23.5gr 2400 with a WLP out of a 6.5" SBHB. Have 100 of the 275's and haven't loaded them yet.

As a southerner that rarely goes out west, the 44 Magnum is my favored woods cartridge because of the carbines that were offered for it in years past, and the fact that it will steamroll anything east (or west) of the Mississippi. If I were going after really big animals, the 480 Ruger would be high on my list. I have been interested in the 480 for some time but really don't need it for my neck of the woods.

I think we are getting off of the question that the OP asked. He has just joined here and has 3 posts and we are off topic about 480s. 44/45 Both guns are great! Both will kill big game! In the correct platform a 45 is bigger. Doesn’t always mean deadlier.
You can’t screw up!! Thanks for joining

Thanks for joining And in his first post he stated: "Would think one would have to step up to a 480 Ruger to see any real difference." I don't think we're off topic in that he introduced a third caliber which is a very viable alternative to the .44 and .45. I've used all three on big-game and am most enthralled with the .480 of this trio. Just to confuse matters more - LOL!

I hunt mostly steel plates, paper plates and pumpkins but I favor the 45 Colt in all flavors - low power for antique Colt, mid-level for USFA and Ruger mid-frame, Ruger Only level for 5 shot mid-frame Rugers, TLA's and full sized 6 shot Rugers and crazy, stupid level for large frame, 5 shot large frame Rugers.
I've had several 44 mag handguns, but like the 44 Special better if I'm shooting a 44. No real reason, just personal preference I guess.
But, I really do like the 480 5 shot large frame Ruger. I think of it as an overgrown 45 Colt.
All three seem to be deadly on my plates and pumpkins.....
