so my local gun store has a mint condition model 94 big bore in 444 Marlin . Not a scratch on it anywhere . Can't tell if it was ever fired ? No box . looking on Gunbroker lately, I can't hardly believe what is being asked for these nowadays . My very first rifle I bought was a Marlin 444ss about 30 years ago . Should have kept it . Asking price $949.00 . So my question is that it has a tang safety , not a crossbolt. Is this unusual ? Earlier model ? Later ? Thanks

I read "...In 1992, Winchester added an unsightly and generally disliked cross-bolt safety to the receiver of Model 94 rifles, including the Big Bore." Found here. www.chuckhawks.com/win_94_big-bore.html

There is a tang safety on my 1892. I don’t know a production year but I do know it’s a gun from overseas. I got the gun second hand from a friend who glued the safety forward, has never been a problem

Ok, thanks Axe . I'll check that article out . I was under the impression the crossbolt safety came later .

Later. Is it a Miroku gun? The Miroku guns are really nice.

I believe the tang safety models were quite recent production, either made just before New Haven went belly up, or maybe even made in Japan after New Haven’s demise.

Well I've managed to ignore that big bore 444 for a few days now , trying not to cave in . But if I'm successful in getting a bear tag this year then ... Anyway , it is all Winchester. Not Miroku made !

My Big Bore 94 is chambered in 307, pre-cross bolt safety. No tang safety either. It does have the rebounding hammer, and made under the USRAC label. I'm thinking it was a mid- or late 1980's production.
My first rifle...bought when I was 16, and has been my deer rifle for a couple of decades. Just mounted an XS ghost ring receiver sight and got some new loads assembled to test.

Big Bores are a neat version of the 94, I have an old pre-safety Big Bore in 375 Win and it is a great little rifle. Winchester used a couple different twist rates but all are faster faster than "normal" in the 444 Big Bores opening up some options with heavy cast bullets. The old microgroove Marlins were 1:38" while Winchester ranged from 1:25" to 1:12" depending on the model. I think Marlin has since gone to 1:20" Ballard rifling. The 444 and 94 make for a lot of power in a compact package.

I had a presafety BB94 in 375 and it was scary accurate with heavy cast bullets. It had beautiful wood and the best blueing job I’d ever seen on a Winchester. Sold it a few years back, only rifle I regret parting with.

I'd love to find a 375 Winchester in shooting grade when I had the money in my hand... I have a 14" Contender barrel in that caliber & it's a wild ride... would love to find one in a Winchester

I have one in .375 Win. Love it. Saw another recently, not as used as mine, with an asking price of around $900.
