Jack Huntington sent me a photo of my .45 Colt Redhawk that he just finished and will be shipping to me shortly. Directly under it is its twin in .41 magnum. He was looking for a .41 stainless Redhawk with a 5.5" barrel, and I wanted some upgrades to my .45 (as yet unfired), so I traded him the stock .41 for the work. Jack said that he would just do the upgrades to the .45 Colt that he would want himself, and what happened, evidently, is that that's exactly what he did--to both his and mine! I had intended for him to rechamber a .44 mag cylinder for tight Colt specs, but he found that the stock cylinder measured .481 in all holes, and that the cylinder/barrel alignment was spot on, which he said was pretty rare. Work done: Trigger job Action/fitting job Forcing cone mod Chamfered cylinder Grip modification (front and back) Jack said that this simple grip mod helps a lot with recoil in the Redhawk, and I like the way it looks, although I might upgrade my grips sometime later to finish off the look. I also need to add a Bowen rear sight to complete the gun. This revolver will see some lead bullets in the 360 grain range, and I plan to develop heavy loads with 300 grain A-frames and 300 grain Cutting Edge solids, all approaching 50k psi. I can't wait to get started, and I can't imagine a better all-around hunting/dangerous game revolver if I need to shoot fast! Any recommendations for a versatile holster for this Redhawk?

Looks nice. The 5.5” Redhawk is my favorite.

Though I haven't held a Redhawk with this particular grip reshape, it appears from a comparison with the stock Ruger round-butts that Huntington's version isn't vertical on the backstrap until much lower on the grip--perhaps on the front as well. It seems that so far, very few Redhawks have been modified by Jack in this way. Looking forward to seeing how this one feels!

Wonder if it makes the gun roll more with recoil?

Wonder if it makes the gun roll more with recoil? That definitely could be.

You are going to love the trigger. Before I sent my Redhawk to Jack he told me the trigger would rival a S&W and I thought he was maybe a little too confidant.
The results, even with the stock spring, are exceptional.
I was going to send it back last year to have some nicer looking and personally fitted wood grips made, but in the end decided to stick with the Pachmayers that I know work for me.
While mine was the shorty Kodiak Backpacker, there will be a 5 1/2" in my hands down the road.

It's been a real pleasure interacting with Jack, even if at a distance. For some reason, all my revolvers are 5" or 5 1/2" barrels. They seem to be just the right compromise for carrying and performance.

As to the holster question, it depends on how you want to carry the gun. I have a few for my 5.5" "Hawks". For a shoulder/chest rig my favorite is the Guide's Choice from Diamond D. For hip carry I really like the Galco DAO. It can be carried strong side or cross draw and is the ONLY holster I have found that can carry that heavy gun comfortably on a pants belt. I am sure there are other good choices but these two are my picks.
Beautiful gun BTW. The grip mod looks good.

Dan, thanks for the recommendations on the holsters. The Guide's Choice would also be my first choice as a chest rig, but I hadn't really looked at the DAO--it really looks good. It appears it can be carried with the belt through just one loop with relatively little cant. Is it stable that way?

It's very stable with a good belt. The belt is as important, if not more so, than the holster. The location of the belt loop is in the right place to support the weight of the Redhawk and makes it carry very well. I most often use mine in the strong side position but I really like having the cross draw option.
