Last November I purchased a Browning 53 which was unfired and new in box. It also came with full box of older (probably 1990's) Remington 100gr JSP ammo. This ammo functions through the gun just fine but the accuracy isn't great. I started some load development using the Remington brass trimmed and resized. I had planned to use 100gr XTP's but quickly found they would not chamber. I also have on hand 85gr XTP's, 95gr Sierra JHP's, a stash of Speer 100gr and 115gr Gold Dots, and some cast 115gr RNFP. Non of the jacketed rounds will chamber but the 115gr cast rounds fall fully into the chamber, as does the Remington ammo. What appears to be happening is that if the design of the projectile does not start tapering immediately above the cannelure/crimp groove, it contacts the lands, preventing the round from chambering. Adding a little pressure to the lever starts to force bullet setback. I guess what I'm saying is that the chamber throat is a bit short for the jacketed bullets I have on hand. If I want to use jacketed projectiles, what is a viable solution?
I did purchase some Starline brass and it measures 1.285" after sizing. The shorter brass length does allow the rounds to seat a bit farther in the chamber. If I trim to 1.281" the rounds will indeed chamber easily. The trim length should be 1.305." So, my question is, barring any feeding issues, is it safe/acceptable practice to use loaded ammo with a reduced charge and cases trimmed .024" shorter than trim length?
my barrel slugs to .312."
