And cheap, too! <$5. Been using them ever since the 1st bulk lots of SKS rifles started arriving into the US. On some, the leather bits can be a bit flimsy so I replace those with strips from an old dress belt.

Thanks for the pic of the Burris compact. Found a Looopold 1X4 that I have mounted and sighted in on my Ruger 77/357. Now to find another Looopold or a Burris Compact 4X. Sorry for the Looopold crack. But in this part of Idaho they are commonly known as Leopold, like the European Nobleman. One of our salesmen was interacting with a Leopold rep and was strongly reminded that the proper pronunciation; even for redneck Idahoans is: Loopold. I'm trying to be faithful to the reps' admonition. (Grin goes here). ***** Picked up on your pronunciation lesson the first time around----"Looo-Pold.” As you suggest, some inbred European nobility carry the handle, Leo-Pold. The scope maker Leupold has always preferred the German Looo-Pold pronunciation. Long as I can remember, “Leo-pold” has been the common Americam pronunciation and it does not require travel to Idaho to hear it. Thus, I expect you and I, and thousands of others, labor along trying to say it right, LOO-pold, against a tide of Leo-polders. The important thing, we all know what we’re taking about, the scope maker which forced all others to tighten up their act on weather-proofing, and gave blue-collar America optical durability in the field. Paden knows of what he speaks. Only 8" in length. I guess I forgot The "Compact" moniker. My "Mini" is about 25 years old. In the end they were inscribed "Timberline". Somewhere in between I guess they were called "Compact". All identical, save for the name. Great little scopes!

I always figured guys mispronounced the name because they didn't know the correct spelling of it...LeUpold vs LeOpold.
The prefix LEU....as in leukocyte or leukemia.
Many immigrants to the US in the early 20th century going by the name Leopold were known to change the second vowel from "o" to "u" so as not to be confused as being associated with the kidnapping murderous pair....Leopold and Loeb.
Perhaps the Leupolds of the optics company were among those immigrants.

Never had much affection for their scopes, but have always respected the proper pronunciation of their name. Am continually astounded at those who will vehemently argue that the Leopolds pronounce their own family name incorrectly. Then again, some of them same folk will vehemently argue that the word "creek" rhymes with "dick", so...
