I am still thinking I could use a BFR in 500JRH. Spending $1.30 each for properly head stamped brass seems excessive. So like the title says, how are you cutting 500 S&W brass to make 500JRH Brass? What is the fastest method? I don't have a lathe. I see that on eBay, someone is selling a jig that is supposed to work with a HF Chop Saw. Is anyone using this method? Thanks for the help.

I bought a cheap chop saw from HF and made my own "jig" if you want to call it that. Really I drilled a hole in some hard wood till i got the proper diameter for the cases then I cut it in batches of 50. I take it to a regular case trimmer and take it down to size from there.
It's a little tedious but it's much better than paying that much for the proper headstamped brass.
Can you share the link for that jig on ebay? I'd be interested to see what it is as I haven't seen it myself.

I use a Dremel in a drill press attachment. Cuts clean and very, very fast.

I'm not doing those calibers, but use my buddies lathe, & the correct collet & part them off... then have file trim dies for most to get to final size

I use the HF cut off saw and the jig from Ebay. Works well and is pretty quick.

I cut .45 Colt brass to .45 ACP length for my .45 Xtra Short. I drilled a piece of hard maple to hold five cases and cut with my band saw. I use a piece of wood backing to hold the cases while cutting. The result is that I can used either in my Ruger ACP cylinder. I cut oversize and trim to exact length with my case trimmer.

I'd have to dig up pictures but it's quick work with a dremel drill press stand and cutoff wheels. I made 100 that way and did the finish cut on a case trimmer. They have held up well thus far.

If you have a vertical bandsaw that jig method Bob Wright posted would be much faster. I might actually do that next time since I have access to a full machine shop now. The Dremel set-up I used was with this stand: www.amazon.com/Dremel-220-01-Rotary-Workstation-Station/dp/B00068P48OYou just turn the case by hand and adjust the cutoff wheel to the correct height.

This is a good thread and a question I have been wondering as well. Thank you for asking this, mark. I have a 500JRH on layaway myself, and want to get ahead of the game during these winter months. The really bitter winter weather and the end of my layaway, should line up nicely here in a few months!

Thanks! I bought one I didn't expect it to be so cheap, if it works out great! Otherwise, I'm not entirely concerned.

I use a tubing cutter. It's horribly wrong and I'm ashamed. But it works and they've taken several full power loads with no ill-affects.

I use the HF chop saw. Nut and bolt added for a stop. Able to make adjustments to fine tune length. I finish them on my Lyman trimmer. Only thing about the HF trimmer is to be careful to not over tighten the brass in the vise. Other than that has worked well for me. I did end up buying a bunch of brass from Buffalo. I shoot the 500 JRH a lot.

Update. I tried Bob's idea. I am no carpenter. I could not cut a piece of wood with the precision I desired to make the wooden jig. I believe it is a great idea and I would bet most here could accomplish what I could not. I purchased the jig listed above from ebay and HF Chop saw. It seems to work just fine. Quick an easy. The consistency is very good. There is no need for an additional final trim. I do taper the inside of the case with adds a little time. I have only made 50 piece of brass because I don't have the gun in my hands yet. It should I arrive this week at my pusher. I should be able to complete the required government paperwork, steps, and obstacles to exercise my constitutional right this week. If all goes well and the Fuhrer Cuomo allows me to have the gun, I should be firing the BFR next week. As a side note, I did not want to spend $40 more dollars (I used a coupon for the saw which saved me a little money)to make brass but I am still making brass cheaper than buying it @$1.30/each. I justified the chop saw purchase because I found another use for it. Thanks for the help.

Could always rent the saw out to a ”Mohel” when your not trimming brass,he’ll be trimming.........you know...try the fish I’ll be here all week!
