It has been a real slow season for me this year. I just havent been motivated so I have only been hunting fair weather when i was off, which has only been about 8-9 times now. I’ve been seeing deer but only small bucks for the most part. Haven't seen but one shooter buck while hunting and a couple does, but haven't really had a good shot on any, until today.
I slipped into the woods around 3:20 after the rain stopped. I had sat there about 30 minutes and it started raining lightly. Luckily i had put on a water resistant coat and was hunting with my stainless Blackhawk, so i hunkered down and sat it out. It finally stopped after 20-25 minutes so i sat back and started watching the woods again. About 15 minures went by and i saw movement to my right. I slightly turned and pulled up my binoculars and started looking. There were 2-3 does in some thick stuff eating acorns and all i could do was watch, as usual.
For some reason today though, they didn’t move away from me. They moved through the woods toward the clearing directly in front of me. Where i was sitting, there is a huge fallen tree laying across a wash. I was on one ridge and they were on the other. Well, they meandered into the wash and was eating underneath the tree. I was glassing them to see if they were mature does or yearlings. One was a pretty good nanny. She was the one i wanted.
About then, i caught movement behind the base of the tree on top of the ridge directly in front of me. I turn to look and there’s a doe standing behind that mass of roots looking dead at me. Luckily, i was in a blind made of burlap among some vines so all she could see moving was the top of my head and it wasnt enough to spook her. But she was curious. She was bobbing her head and stomping her foot trying to get me to show myself, so i turned my attention to her. A quick peek and she looked like she was big enough to be a year or two old, so i put my binoculars down and grabbed my Bisley Hunter and tried to find her in the scope. She finally stepped out from behind the roots and i could pick her up between two trees. She wasnt standing head on, but slightly quartering towards me, so I put the crosshairs on her neck and started pulling the trigger. I almost jerked the trigger, but i thankfully stopped myself and took a breath and focused on trigger pull. The gun belted a fireball and as the gun came back to rest i could see the deer as it was flipping head over tail. She tried to get up once, kicked a couple times and she was done. The 44 mag had done its part, and thankfully, so had I.
Shot was about 40 yards. The bullet traveled down her spine and didn’t exit. I did not find the bullet though, unfortunately. Bullet was one i cast using a Mihec mold called the 44 Terminator. It is about a 245 grain hollow point and is powdercoated. Load was 19 grains of 2400.
Pistol is a Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter. This is the gun that got me hooked on single actions. I had one years ago and foolishly sold it, so when the opportunity came to buy another one from my buddy, I jumped on it. Scope is a Nikon 2-8. I shoot off a Bog Pod with a PSR rest.
A few weeks ago i was hunting with it and got busted by a deer. The thing shines like a neon sign in the woods, so i decided to put a wrap on it today to cut down on glare. It did the trick and didn’t even catch on fire when i shot. Lol
I am thankful the Good Lord blessed me with this meat for the freezer.
