Bought this early 2018. Spoke with Mr. Shaver on the phone, he confirmed this is one of his builds, not just one of his barrels on another 'smith's project. Previous owner apparently decided to remove/keep the sights that were on it when he (or she) decided to part with it via consignment sale. So... the tang has holes for a sight and the front dovetail has a loosely fitting filler in place. Suggestions for which sights to spend my hard earned money on? I'd like to finally get this to the 500 yd range with a few 45-70 loads when the weather breaks. At almost 11 lbs I expect std 405 gr 45-70 loads ("Trapdoor loads") with be quite pleasant shooting, would be fun tossing lead at the 500 meter steel target. Wondered if it would be too much trouble to set it up with rear tang sight/front globe AND blocks for a repro of one of the old scopes like those made by MVA? Remington Lee Shavers #5 Rolling Block 45-70 Description: Wood is in 85% condition with some marks on it. Case coloring and bluing are 95%+ condition. Bore is excellent, mechanically excellent. Lee's Economy Soule is a great sight for the money, if you are looking to spend big bucks he offers a deluxe version. I have no experience with it (the deluxe version) but would trust anything he put his name on. The MVA's with screw adjustable elevation are also excellent, have one on my 1895CB and no complaints. I don't care for the tang sights in which you unscrew the eyepiece and have to slide for adjustment. Haven't gone down the road of messing with the old style scopes. Your rifle looks really nice and should be awful nice for lobbing bullets at steel.

You might take a look at Steve Baldwin's sights. Used them extensively when I was heavy into black powder cartridge silhouette. Here's a link. www.baldwinsights.com/ Ken
