Joe, I don't know, sometimes I wonder if this elk hunting thing is worth it or not! I'm almost 74 years old & this snow isn't getting any warmer. Today as I headed back out I happened to look off into a wide open field & there stood about 30 head just watching me. They were probably 300 yds out with lots of wide open spaces all around them & no way for me to close the distance. That lead cow had chosen that spot wisely. If I ever meet her on the street, female or not I'll gun her down! I just kept going & hopped on my 4 wheeler & headed up the long canyon & to my surprise there had been elk in there since my Friday visit, I was pumped when I saw all the tracks but again darkness came & I rode out in the dark, I didn't even turn on my headlight, the deep tracks in the snow kept my 4 wheeler in place & I kind of enjoy riding in the dark, it lets you enjoy the moment a little better. I'm hoping I get another snow storm before the end of the month, maybe that will push them into my honey hole, you just never know with elk.

The more time you can spend outta sight of a couch, the better. When I grow up I want to be just like Sixshot ! Joking aside, the man is an inspiration.

Not stopping, just whining a bit but it sure beats working. Can't get'em if you don't go after em!

Dick, I really admire your perseverance. The older I get (two years your junior), the harder it is to put up with the cold, uncomfortable waiting positions and just general mobility and endurance issues. Some “age” a bit better than others – Bradshaw appears to be one – good on him. I am at the point where it just isn’t worth it anymore. Keep on keepin' on, and continue to share your experiences – I for one thoroughly enjoy them.

Just a quick clarification -- I still enjoy a morning bow hunt for elk early in the season, just can't deal with snow any more.

Reading the stories of the old hands helps to bring things into perspective for guys my age. I've started to include a hunting log in my gear when we go spot/stalk or blind hunting. Upon my arrival back at camp every evening I've started documenting each hunt in detail while they're fresh. Most are as boring and slow as molasses, but I'm often amazed at the things I would have forgotten had I not written them down when I go back and read old entries. It helps that I'm reading them by fire or lantern light; the ambiance makes the mundane seem more exciting. I am hopeful that one of these days someone finds these little records as fascinating as I find ya'll's when you post on here. Thanks to all of you.

A very good thought that, a hunting diary. We have a log book at camp and it is enjoyable to look back to see, read thru the hunting and trout seasons.
