My youngest son Tony (11) and I headed to the local gunshow today. It was the first US show for me in Lord knows how long and the first near our new place in Texas. It was a smaller show and he hoped to find something for Christmas while there. I was just happy to be out with him and to be at a show after 5 years in Canada and the past few months in the Middle East.
We walked the aisles seeing a nice diversity of wares and many fairly priced. I noted a nickel N-frame on a table so dropped by to see what it was. A nice 4" M25-5 with an old gent selling it and just a handful of other guns. I picked it up, gave it the check out and all seemed quite fine. I pulled the .452 Hornady slug from my pocket and slipped it into the cylinder. As I suspected, it was a bt loose. Darn.... Well I just had to ask the price and he advised $500. Hmmm, not a bad deal and with perhaps .454 bullets I could probably get it to shoot. I offered $450 and he said "deal". So did I.
We continue through the show and Tony suggests that a centerfire (his first) sixgun would be a great Christmas gift lasting well into adulthood. He advised that the toys he had received in the past grew old rather quickly. He also suggested that he would contribute whatever cash he received for Christmas via the grandparents. Hmmm, I like his thinking.
We near the 2nd to the last aisle and he spies a satin nickel 38 Special that "looks awesome". I headed over to find he has found a nicely refinished Colt Officers Model Target 38 Special. He particularly noted and liked the tapered unribbed barrel. I give it the checkout to find it in fine shape with still crisp lettering and an amazingly smooth double action with a crisp single action. It locked up as tight as new too. No price listed so I ask worried that the price and Tony's/my budget would not align. The gent, who also had a very nice selection of J-frame snubbies including a few ariweghts, advised that he could only go down to $300. Hmmm, Tony and I both like his thinking.
So I am looking at these two fine shooters quite pleased. The 38, while not original, will make a fine trainer for Tony. The 45 will give me something to work on too. Now I need to figure out how to replace the aweful Colt/Pachmayr grips on the Colt with decent wood ones. I'll try to post photos tomorrow.
