I thought that I would share my hunt from last fall. With hunting season approaching I hope to have new stories to tell next after next weekend, but last years adventure was worth telling.
I was with my friend in SW ND on his property. Spent opening morning (Season Starts at noon) testing and chronographing my 45. Spent the rest of the day glassing, watched several Mule deer and WTs running around. We probably had as much fun watching hunters from our vantage point try to get onto the deer!
The next morning we went out and did the same, glassing from a high point, after watching several bucks we found one bedded in a creek bank about a half mile away. He was approchable so we took off and snuk up a creek bed and crossed over to where we saw him bedded. I got crawled in and looked around, NO Buck, due to my youth and lack of patience I sat up.... he jumped up just 10 feet away from where he Was bedded. Oops
We watched him go up into a big draw and I looped around an got ahead of him and my partner pushed him up the draw. He came by me at about 25 yards and I shot. Running straight away I kept firing believing that I shot him poorly the first round. Then watched him over the hill and into the next draw.
Following up we found blood and hair at the top of the hill, I connected again at about 225 yards. We followed him up and found him but decided to back out.
The next morning we found him dead, Shot poorly first and broke the ball of his pelvis second. Glad I kept firing and glad we followed him up. I thought I saw him stumble as he ran over the hill.
Ruger Blackhawk 5 1/2 45
308 MP
21.2 WC820 Remington 2 1/2
We recovered him the next morning, Thats when things got interesting!
As we sat around looking over the situation, a group of Mule deer moved in on us. Milling around in the draw that we were working on the deer in. A few does and a couple bucks. We watched for a bit and the went over the hill, when the smaller of the bucks decides he is going to come back over the hill towards us and bed down just above us about 70 yards from where my dead deer was laying. After a little contemplation i decided to try him with the Ol recurve. I went up the hill a bit and worked it sideways and got into position, the whole time my friend is watching with Binos.. I had to take a rather long shot up a pretty steep angle but ended up hitting him in the front shoulder. He was wounded but wasnt going to go down right away, after pushing him a ways and shooting a few more arrows we backed out.
Coming in from a different angle a few hours later we got him spotted and I managed to get snuck in to about 8 yards(he was laying on his side feeling pretty sorry for himself). I let fly another arrow and hit him right in the heart. He jumped up, spun around and I shot him again at about 20 right in the lungs. At that point he had three arrows in him, all fatal, and i remember looking up at Jeff and saying "He is going to wreck every one of those Damn arrows!".... And he did not disappoint!
Quite the hunt! Lots of meat in just a few hours.
We always have lots of fun together and are usually successful..
He ended up with his own deer and I will include a few pictures of some of the fun along the way!
Thanks for Reading, I got a Little long winded!
