The 4x Leupold is a tank and is light which is a major plus dealing with high torque recoil that can come from these guns. Inertia is not your friend! I have some Weavers as well and they are great scopes for the money!! I DO NOT prefer the 2x personally. Makes it seem farther to me than the naked eye although it does provide a nice aiming point. I would opt for a 4x Leupold or the Weaver if it were my money

Leupold 2X for wooded country in the East. Leupold 4X for more open country. I'd get a set of Ruger rings and use fingernail polish, as David suggests. A Bushnell 2-6X is a possibility, but I prefer a light fixed power on revolvers.

I'd order the parts from Ruger. Also agree to start with lower power. Got a M-8 2X from a member here and mounted on a 44mag Hunter. It's gonna take awhile to get used to for me. Felt like dramamine might be needed ! More magnification beyond my ability it appears. Glasses, my first, due here any day and all will change again I fear. stay the course, luck.

The Weaver 2x handgun scope has an objective bell. It is easier to clear snow from an objective bell than from a straight tube----example Leupold M8 2x19mm EER. The Weaver is said to have 1/4-inch micrometer clicks. Positive click adjustments should be on all internal-adjustment scopes; it is a throwback to antiquity for Leupold to hang on to friction adjustments for so long, although its kept Vari-X II prices well below Vari-X III for years prototypical scopes of extreme weather resistance, which forced the entire scope market to change. I hope never to repeat a few weather-beaten exposures I’ve had afield, through which no scope fared better than Leupold. The Leupold 2x and 4x EER are built with Vari-X II friction adjustments. Leupold can retrofit Target Turrets with micrometer adjustments.
1/4-inch clicks are unnecessarily fine, with 1/2-inch plenty for nearly all handgun applications. A half-inch click moves POI 1-inch @ 200 yards; how much tighter does a handgun need?
UNITY MAGNIFICATION, commonly referred to as 1x: whatever law of optics may obtain, the image through a scope of unity magnification appears smaller than to naked eye. The shrinkage, or illusion of shrinkage, is just enough to be noticeable, and it is annoying. 1.5x may look like 1x naked eye. 2x generally as a micro-enlargement. 2.5x enters the zone of magnification at which it becomes difficult to track a moving target. This is critical in woods, where magnification also isolates the image from landscape outside the scope. The LONG EYE RELIEF necessary for safety with handguns slows target acquisition----compared to the 4-inch eye relief of a rifle scope. Short eye relief also transmits more light to the eye at dusk.
RUGER RINGS are made in specific models for the stepped topstrap of the Super Redhawk. The barrel rib of Super Blackhawk Hunter and Redhawk Hunter are the same width, thus same rings fit either revolver.
Ruger rings, available in four finishes * “Shiny”----standard polished & brushed stainless steel. * “Matt”----bead blasted stainless. * “Shiny blue”----standard polished & blued. * “Matt blue”----bead blasted & blued.
Ruger rings, 3 heights * Low----up to 32mm objective. * Medium----up to 42mm objective (shipped with revolver). * High----up to 52mm objective. Four finishes available in three heights. Ruger rings are available for 1-inch and 30mm tube.
The huge advantage of Ruger rings, or a Weaver base attached to the barrel (as shown on a Super Blackhawk in recent eskimo36 thread), lands on easy-on/easy-off scope----without disturbing iron sights. Thus, the ability to go from iron sights to scope without affecting ZERO of each. David Bradshaw

I like the 2X Leupold for off hand guns and the 4X Leupold for guns fired from a rest. The old Burris 1X and 2X scopes made for Gil Hebard are tough and reliable. We mounted them on the slides of our 1911 wadcutter guns, fired 10s of thousands of rounds, and could not kill them. I have quite a few and use them extensively on off hand guns. They have a huge black dot and very fine cross hairs. The big dot helps keep you from trying so shoot perfect shots. The 1X actually makes the target look smaller. FWIW on most days I like the 2X. On jittery days the 1X can be the better choice.
