What Bob Wright said. The base pin is longer - by design - to retain it in the gun when removing the cylinder.. Sure beats having to fish the pin out of the mud or snow, if you happen to get a mite careless or fumble-fingered.

Okay, so here is a follow up to my earlier post.
Thanks to some earlier sage advice I finally got out to "shoot the blamed thing." Ran a couple boxes of 45 colt and 45 acp through it and it is sweet. However the engineer in me took over and I had to "measure and tinker" with it. I decided to slug the bore with a lead egg sinker and then measured groove diameter with a micrometer - .450". Huh, I thought groove diameter was supposed to be .451". So I ran the slug through both cylinders and it passed all throats with no problem. So then I start to worry if I have thread choke that is down sizing my slug. A .441" pin gauge slid through the barrel with no issue; a .442" gauge would not enter the muzzle. Slugged and measured it again with the same result.
I dunno. Think I will just go enjoy my toy. Thanks, everyone for all your input.

Were you shooting jacketed or cast bullets?

All factory ammo: 45acp jacketed hardball and 45c was lead "cowboy" loads. I was at an indoor range, so 25 yd max and no ability to shoot from a rest. None of the factory ammo passes the throats (.452" bullet diameter?) I am guessing .452" ammo necks down to .451" throat then down to .450" in the barrel??

Did some admittedly un-scientific checking on my Blackhawk 45 Colt cylinder today. I took one of the bullets I use, and checked it against the throats in my S&W 25 and my Redhawk ... the bullet (.452) pushes through the throats on each chamber easily with finger pressure alone. On the Blackhawk cyclinder, not even close to sliding through, the throats are much smaller ... would have to pound them through with a hammer. I’m thinking I’ll probably buy a reamer.

When I got my .45c blackhawk, my throats leaded pretty badly. I checked them and they were all small. Three of the throats were visibly egg shaped. I reamed all of them to .4525. This stopped the leading in the throats, however I had thread choke that caused bad leading just past the forcing cone. I was too scared to firelap it because of all the misinformation on the web. I read that people have lapped their barrels by shooting jacketed bullets through them. After about 300xtp’s the sound of the gun changed, it started shooting much better and the leading stopped. This all took about 6 months. I learned alot about revolvers, but am very hesitant to buy another ruger .45c.
