Video pretty much eliminated any delusions I might have had about outrunning or out climbing a black bear. youtu.be/hURgA_BNSGc

It's funny sorta. I've had many run ins with black bears. Many of my friends, doing the same things, have not. We tend to only believe what we can see. They haven't seen any. So.. I'm "bearanoid" for paying attention, packing a handgun with a big hole in the end of the barrel, etc.. We have close friends that have tent camped with us over the years. The guy ran trap lines with me as a boy and young man. He was an avid bird hunter for years. Had never seen a bear. We've been taking them up into the Penn hills to a bed-n-breakfast kinda place that sits at the end of the road alongside some pretty trout water. The place is elbow deep in bears and I've warned them every time we go. They got "lucky" the first few trips and didn't see any bears. The 4th time while sitting to a French country cuisine meal I again warned them and said you could out the window at any time and possibly see a bear and they laughed. Then one of them looked out the window...and screamed BEAR ! Yup, one walked past the window. A few trips later they jumped one in the parking lot while accessing their vehicle for extra clothes after dark. That scream emptied the bar/lounge. I've spent the day looking for bears and bear sign only to get back to my car and find fresh bear scat 15ft from my back bumper. Apparently they have a sense of humor too. Stay safe folks.

There is vigilant, and there is paranoid. I get the same thing with folks about rattlesnakes,.....some are so paranoid about it they never get a chance to really hunt the game they’re after, others are so oblivious they need to be yanked back before stepping on one.

When a buddy of mine kills moose in Alaska he and his friends gut it out then move the body at least 60 from the gut pile if possible. On a few occasions he has walked back to the gut pile after getting the meat cut up and packed only to find it gone.

CTF, can you please explain the "now that few people are killing bears" line ? What changed ? Worse inland than coastal ? Was watching a critter channnel show last eve on Yellowstone and they were researching on why the Elk pop was dwindling, and mentioned the "endangered" grizzlies... As much as I was enjoying the scenery, I couldn't listen to them spout bs.

BS, as in they didn't mention the wolves, and I don't think the grizzly is "endangered" within the Yellowstone ecosystem.

I read this article when it first came out and was not surprised. Amazing how GPS found this out.
