Talk of this, rumors, stories go back quite a few years. Tech data to support is nice. We had trouble with black bears "claiming" bow killed deer in the Allegeny Forest in the '80's. Throwing rocks and yelling because no firearm allowed during bow season or after legal hunting hours and flashlight/spotlight in use..etc.. My after dark encounters with black bears is why I'm a bit anal about having a handgun on board now.

This is how it's always been for us up here. Now that very few people are killing bears . There are boat loads of brown bear on the coast. When deer hunting on the coast, When I get a deer down . I top off the mag in my rifle, chamber a round and put the rifle on full safe. I only hunt with Ruger M77 Mk2 or Winchester Model 70 / Kimber/ Montana 1999 and military 98 Mauser action rifles. I keep the rifle within arms reach all the while I'm working up the carcass and packing it out. I know several people that have had deer litterly taken off their backs when packing them out. I also hunt deer with bear rifles. 338 Win mag or bigger. Plus I wear a handgun. I'm not bearanoid just have a lot of experience around brown bear. Here in the interior its not nearly as bad and I hunt caribou mostly with my little 6.5 Creedmoor. But I still follow the same rules. The little 130 gr TSX bullet will kill a bear deader than a wedge with a good shot.

Yup, been there seen that on Kodiak and a little to close for comfort. I always have my 454 Redhawk on my hip here in the Interior as well.

In the Interior I usually wear my G20SF. On the coast my 480 or 45 Colt loaded heavy. One thing that helps is always paying attention. Understanding that there are other predators out there.

Early September, my son was out for his annual week long bow hunt for Elk west of Yellowstone park and only a couple of hours south of our main stomping grounds. They saw seven different grizzlies, all within 60 to 100 yds – none were afraid of humans. Seemed to be attracted by elk calls. Several stories of attacks this fall so far and rifle season just stated Sat. More bears around than the powers that be want to acknowledge. Probably a lot more encounters than reported.
FWIW,
Paul

FWIW, Paul Montana or Idaho? I think in Idaho they allowed what, 1 griz to be hunted this year?? Big whoop. I think maybe the same in MT and WY but can't remember for sure. My buddy that still lives in Missoula (where I'm from originally) said he heard the NPS was going to cull some griz out of Yellowstone. The scuttlebutt was whether the Park Rangers were gonna do it or allow some kind of hunt. Have you heard of any of this?

Montana. Last I heard, judge stopped Fed's from turning over management to the states and issued an injunction stopping any hunts in WY, ID, MT. Haven't hear anything regarding "cull" hunts in the park -- that ought to set some folks hair on fire.

I remembered that I forgot that the culling in Yellowstone was Bison...not griz
