I was wondering if anyone had one? I'll be shooting it in a FA97, which will need to be deep seated of course. They don't need to be hot rod loads, the little gun and my big hands, the 97 eats me up. Have basically settled on two loads. First, 300gr RCBS SWCGC or 300gr Lee FNGC DC (both samples I have run right at 320gr) at 1,150 fps +-. And the most used is a 270gr SAA crimped over the front drive band and driven by 7.8gr of HP38 for right at 900 fps. Paul That's the only load I've pulled from an old thread and would have to buy powder to try it. Which is not the worst thing in the world, but it could end up another orphan powder in already too large supply. Oddly enough... I've shot some 270gr SWC in this gun before, some I got from Lynn at Dry Creek bullets way back. Those were a different bullet and seated normal and fit in the gun. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know they were that heavy at the time. I grabbed them from my stock and loaded them as 250's. Shot up a bunch. It was only when I went to load more that I realized "these don't look right?" Weighed them and was shocked and angry at myself. They were middle of the road loads so there was no danger, but still, that was sloppy work. Anywho...

I use unique for most of my .45c loads. I don’t have a FA97, but if it were me I would feel comfortable starting at 7.5 and working up .5 at a time until I got the desired velocity. Not very scientific. I know, but the freedom arms is a strong gun, and should handle it just fine.

I think the only Unique I have is made by Hercules, in a cardboard can, down in my damp basement since the late 70's or early 80's, so I'd have to buy that too.

The SAA 270 I’ve loaded weighs 280-285 grains, is Powder Coated, which baking process anneals it. DEEP SEATED to roll crimp .030" above the front band----over 12.5/HS-6----makes for a perfectly pleasant load in a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk or Freedom Arms M83. Can’t say how I’d feel about it in the Freedom Arms M97, as I don’t get along with the grip anyway. The backstop feels specially designed to slide in my palm before the bullet’s out the door.
Paul105 says he uses 7.8/HP-38 and gets 900 fps. If I were to try HP-38 or Win 231, I’d start at 6.7/HP-38, which might drop velocity to just under 800 fps (speculation). I’d get a pair of deerskin gloves and rub in my warmed-up mix of clear mineral oil & pure beeswax. David Bradshaw

Well, what powders DO you have? Looking at the burn rate chart, I don't have anything in the neighborhood. Maybe some 231, but if so not much, and far from fresh.

Glenn Fryxell did an article on that bullet some years back. Many different loads and pressure levels. Don't know about deep seating though. I'm not computer savy so can't direct you to article itself, sorry.

Squigz, you are correct sir. It was Brian Pearce that I was thinking of. Should never talk or type before first morning coffee.

The cylinder is too short not to.
I purchased a pound of HP-38 today, so I'll be exploring that avenue first.

231/HP38 and Unique are my first choices for .45 Colt loads for moderate speeds and great accuracy. My 26-1 Smith I have been shooting for a while loves both powders in the 7.5gr range with Hornady 250 XTP bullets. Loves this combo.

While the weight will be off and newer powders won’t be listed there is data for deep seated #454424/452424 Kieth bullets in the older Lyman manuals. This was due to changes in the crimp groove location over the years as well as providing data for S&W m25s produced prior to the 1975 change in cylinder length. These could be used as cautious starting points to develope loads.
