Sometimes you just stumble onto something or just catch a line in a post and it leads to a good ending. This is one of those cases. I recently saw a thread on a forum that was a ways down from the top but the words Texas Longhorn Arms caught my eye. From what I gathered, a dealer just took in this gun from the original owner who claims he had not shot it since he bought it form Bill Grover a number of years ago. The dealer did not know much about these guns nor did most of the guys on the other forum but I sent the guy a PM letting him know a little about the TLA history and shared that while I have had an Improved #5 in 45 Colt in the past, I let it go to Princeout in order to help finance the purchase of the 3 gun set of S#300 TLA guns. I let him know that if he decided to sell it I would like to know and then next thing you know we had agreed on terms and price and here it is. A couple things about this that stand out to me besides the 45 Colt caliber. Number one is how plum the frame is on this gun. I have another TLA with a slightly plum frame but this gun is at a whole different level. I know some guys don't like the plum on some of these revolvers but I do. Second is the grips. All the TLA guns I've own that wore wood grips were at best underwhelming in color and figure. The grips on this gun are an entirely different story. Even if I could still get ivory grips, I think I'd leave these wood grips right where they are. I may still get a second set made and fit to the gun but these are some of the nicest wood grips or stocks I've seen on a TLA gun.

NOT A LOT OF TLA # 5's OUT THERE. THEY ARE OUTSTANDING REVOLVERS, AND ACCURATE TOO! MY BEST EVER 3 SHOT GROUP AT A 100 METERS, OPEN SIGHTS, WAS WITH A 45 COLT TLA No. 5, AS I RECALL IT WAS 1 1/4 INCH GROUP. BESIDES THE GUN, YOU NOW OWN A PIECE OF BILL GROVER'S HEART AND SOUL, AS HE PUT A LOT OF IT INTO THESE REVOLVERS. GOOD MAN THAT DIED BROKE AND BROKEN HEARTED OVER A BUSINESS DISPUTE INVOLVING TLA. I AM LUCKY TO OWN SEVERAL OF HIS REVOLVERS, AND EVEN LUCKIER TO HAVE KNOWN HIM.

you've got an awesome & rare gun there for sure...
I'm one of those that isn't normally a fan of Plumb coloring ( I have a plumb Dan Wesson 44 Magnum )... it's not that I'm not a fan of the color... I guess the anal retentive part of me somehow doesn't like the color difference between the frame, & the barrel & cylinder... which seems to be the normal... also knowing that they probably matched at birth, but the frame faded doesn't help...
I'll admit, that after building a two tone revolver, a while back... I'm starting to look at the Plumb & blued in a similar way...
that is, however, the most plumb colored frame I think I've seen...

NICE gun Robb!!!!!!! I've handled & shot a few TLA's,, but do not own one. That would be a prize to own.
As for the plum coloring,, Ruger is well known to have plum colored guns come out. Apparently,, it has to do with the silica mix involved in the casting of the frames & parts. Something about the variations (sometimes) of the raw metal & silica mix.
When it first started happening,, many folks sent back Rugers to be re-blued. And,, over time,, they would turn plum again. Now,, they are prized by many who collect Rugers. It doesn't affect the strength or anything of the gun,, just the looks!

This picture of my Dan Wesson, doesn't show the plumb color as much, as if it was taken outside, but most "plumb" guns I've seen, are still blued, but with a purple cast... Rob's gun pictured has much less bluing color than most I've seen...

That is fantastic colouring, almost looks like the grips were chosen to match. Love it, it’s so perfect, it looks intentional.

Very nice Robb! Glad you got another 45! What's the serial number? I have an orphan pair of TLA #5 grips that I've been looking for the matching gun to re-home them. Tim
