Groo here I always though a "PPP" WAS for general use out of town "in the country". I have plenty of high cap "town guns" for social work. A "few autos for winter ,[easier to strip and dry if/when you fall in the creek or snow drift] BUT the PPP is for wandering around ,working away from the bunk house , aka "Big Sky" country... I have concluded that the lighter the powder charge the bigger the bore needed.[full up 327 or 357 to light or "target" 45colt or acp.] Also you can get too light! For me , above 9mm/38/357 30oz is the lightest that can be shot well [for most] if 41mag 35oz and 44mag about 40oz+. The shortest barrel you can hit a paper plate with [one handed] at the longest distance you might shoot. For most that will be 20 to 30 yds.[we can all do better with 2 hands] Hunting will be rare plinking will be close SD will be closer. Like many , the one I want to use can not be replaced,my Horvath Montado 41mag converson. I guess the Ruger 3 3/4 in birds head 44mag would be next.

I'm a sucker for short barrels and big bores. Lightweight 500 JRH which rides in a Barranti holster.

I see lots of great answers! One revolver not mentioned so far however is also a near-ideal trail gun or Perfect Packing Pistol, and in a caliber such as .45 Colt it has been since 1873: the Colt Single Action Army.

Speaking of which (although it's not a Colt), this USFA Rodeo has been along for a walk or two in the woods... Good call! The SAA is STILL a very viable and proven candidate!
