You guys sure raise some good points and post pictures of some real beauties. One I had forgotten about is a plowhandle 44 Special Ruger that I have converted to lightweight. Came out 33 ounces with an aluminum grip frame and ERH. Also, put on laminated grips that saved one ounce.
Very accurate, not too tight that fouling would lock it up and does hold six rounds. Maybe I should get it out and carry it more often. Weighs less than my Single Sixes...

I have a police background and was carrying a Model 15 Combat Masterpiece for Uncle Sam at age 18. Fast Forward 55 years later and the one constant in 33 years of police work and daily packing has been Smith and Wesson. My grandson now owns my 629 Mountain Revolver, and my Pre 29 5" is too heavy for all day carry. My take is "worst case" is an animal is upon me and I need 5 or 6 rounds double action at bad breath range.
So I opt for my Model 69 4.25" 44 Mag and I'm saving for a Model 69 2.75". I have a lot of hearing loss from 20+ years as a police firearms instructor and rangemaster. If I don't see the animal there is a good chance I won't hear one until we're within closing distance. 5 or 6 Rounds of 44 Mag DA fast, at contact range is how I envision a confrontation with something that is powerful with teeth and claws and I can't get away from.
DA to me is much faster than SA especially with all the muscle memory built in to this old human.

I should have also include this little guy. FA97 45 Colt, 3 1/2" BBl, round butt. It weighs 33 oz and can/has handled 320gr (Lee, RCBS) at 1,150 fps if needed or desired. Right now it is equipped with the 45 acp aux cyl because I shoot the DAs better and the 2 3/4" M69 is about the same size and weight. Compared to S&W 3+" 386 (same size as 396 one of previous posts) Paul

....another vote for the Freedom Arms 97. Mine is a 4.25" round butt .41 Magnum and it is just plain old compact...
For a double action it would be a Taurus Titanium Tracker also in .41 Magnum... Have one 4" and a very rare 6"...great shooters and just beyond lite....

As a general, always have handy gun, mine is a G20SF Loaded with Buffalo Bore 220 gr TC hard cast . Mine Chrony'd @ 1200 fps. However, for serious rambling , I think a 4.2" barreled Redhawk with a RMR would be tough to beat. Imho, serious rambling , entails nights out in the brush. Having some shot shells for grouse and rabbits would be iceing on the cake. Mine would be in 458 Colt but other carts would work as well.

The trail guns that ride in my holster, are either a Ruger bird’shead .45 Colt Vaquero 3.75 inch or a S&W 686 Plus .357 2.5 inch. Both are solid, reliable, accurate guns and carry easy.

klnc... that is a most beautiful gun... & I'm sure it's quite functional... but to me, that's a BBQ gun... I'd be worried about damaging some part of that pretty finish, if I were heading out into a mountain trail for the week, or out into the woods chain sawing or something... those satin finish stainless guns with Black Micarta grips are what I picture a trail gun should be

Were talking "trail guns"., PPP , survival, wilderness trek and overnites were all mentioned too. ColdTriggerFinger brings up shotshells. Gotta admit my speed strips almost always include a shotshell. Here in my yard a couple rice loads too. This thought brings me to the "Trail Gun" needs to be a revolver so as to be able to handle a wide range of projectiles and load levels.

I live and walk down in the borderlands where the needs are quite different. Our "threat level" animals are about the size of a medium dog or slither on the ground and generally leave your area as fast as they can. Of course there is a lot of 2 legged coyotes but that's a different story. All that really means is bone crushing large bore magnums are not required for safety. A good 327 or 357 fills the bill. For a general packing/trail gun I prefer a "forget it's there " size but still have the ability to reach out there accurately. Adjustable sights and a 3 to 4 inch barrel. Stainless is preferred as they may be treated roughly. Anything prized or custom will stay home because, well, as we say down here, caca pasa. The 4" SP-101 guns in 327 and 357 cover the bases perfectly. Leather must have retention of some sort and it will be scratched , sweat stained and worn high and tight at about 4 o-clock to be out of the way .No charging beasties here so no fast draw needed.

I have many different configurations from 22,32,38,45,500L But recently have taken a hankering for 44 spec. 250 grn keith style bullet over 7.5 grn of unique or 8 grns of Hs6...Just took an old 3 screw 357 to Andy Horvath to build me a LiL Gun of his 4 inch bbl in 44 spec. I think this will live with me much ...a 32 H&R bearcat will be close by
