Doing some reading, will try not to ask questions already answered on other posts
I've been saving up for the new BFR in 500L but after much much.. much thought, I decided to roll with the JRH for two reasons.
1. On a tight budget and after reloading for (although enjoying) the 480 Ruger, kind of tired not finding any components at shows, shops, or local forums here in GA. SW500 brass and bullets are easy to come by, I also cast but I'll touch on that later.
2. I know aesthetics come second to function and I've tried with every fiber to get over the banana bisley grip BFR has but lord help me does it butterface the bfr to me. Love the lines of my 480 bisley, the tail rolling off the back of the grip, bull barrel, bisley hammer and rounded trigger, very pretty wheel gun imo. I do like the looks of the JRH grip mod and obviously being made specifically for my hand will be a no brainer in comfort. I understand the plow handle with max loads may be rough but my thinking is a $1000 500 JRH BFR with the $500 mod already matches the current MSRP $14XX I was told for the 500L bisley anyway so once all finished I'll have a cannon I'll enjoy using and looking at.
So having said that, I do have a couple of questions, help me confirm my thoughts before putting down the cash
-barrel length
Leaning towards 5.5", like the concept of the perfect packing pistol and the 480 6.5" is a tad long for strong side draw. I know I could later get the 7.5" cut down to 6" if I wanted but I feel it wouldn't be worth the shipping/hassle.
I want to get into handgun hunting, I assume the 5.5" would pose no issue for iron sight ranges and this would primarily be a woods/range gun first, hunting handgun second.
-dies
Will do more reading, I understand as long as they're SW500/special* they'll be easier to use/no trimming.
I remember no rifle primers, I'll have CCI350 for H110/296, CCI300 for Unique/HS-6
-brass seating depth and bullet design
If I remember correctly, have about .53" of seating depth in the brass so limited up to about 490grs max with a .45" nose unless you ream the brass (not something I want to do for now at least) or use Hornady 500gr XTP
I designed all my 480 molds on mountainmolds website, love Dan's work. So for the JRH I'm thinking an 80-82% WFN GC 440gr and maybe a LFN 75% 480gr PB, I'd welcome any opinions on other molds/designs.
That's about it, I'll be stuck with the rubber clubfoot until I find some replacement micarta (and then eventually the JRH mod), looked briefly for a holster but all I find are for the 7.5" models. Will the Ruger Super Blackhawk holsters fit the beefier BFR frame?
Thanks all for your input, really enjoy the 480 but I'm ready for some 440gr 1300fps 50 cal
