There are a few firearms forums based in Oregon that have M1's pop up in the classifieds from time to time. I recently bought back my first CMP M1 from a friend I sold it to 20 years ago. Unfired since it was rebuilt in '47. Been firing everyone's surplus ball ammo- US, Korean, Greek.

I have two of them, one acquired thru the old DCM program for $165 in 1989 and the other a CMP Special a couple of years ago. It didn't function properly at all, but as I didn't get directly from CMP I had to have another smith fix it for me, because the wait for CMP was at least 6 months. I used the first one, an H&R in lots of matches and still have it. There are always lots of M1's on the auction sites to choose from, usually though they start at about a grand but unlike CMP you can see what you are getting.

Friends of mine used M1's for coyote hunting in Texas in the 60's. They loved how they could reach out.
It was my issue rifle in Junior ROTC. Very easy to field strip and clean. We would shoot them at summer camp, which was an old WWII Army base. And, we would conduct mock engagements with blanks. This was in Dallas, Texas during the 1960's. I doubt anyone could get away with that today. Loved how the 8-round clip made a pinging noise as it ejected. I have great affection for that venerable rifle.
Wasn't it Patton who exclaimed that it was the M1 that won the war?
