I thought I would try my hand at a set of jigged bone grips. I bought some bleached beef thigh bones (dog toys from Petsmart) and gave it a go. I'm happy with the resu lt, but I am pretty sure that I can improve on them.

I'm impressed! Will probably never look at plain bones the same again. More details?

I'm impressed! Will probably never look at plain bones the same again. More details? Sure! After I cut the two pieces and traced the existing grips on them I cut them to shape, then dyed the backs with leather dye so that I could mount them and scribe the exact shape of the frame on them. Then I sanded the outer surfaces to shape- they aren't symmetrical in thickness so I set them up for my right hand. Then I took a carbide burr and gouged out the 'jigging,' dyed them again (with Fiebings Oil dye for leather) then sanded and polished them for contrast. What else can I tell you?

Thanks!
One of these days, I'll try my luck with soft wood. Once I get that down, I may just start roaming the aisles at petsmart! ;-)

They look great and I’ve done pretty much the same process for use as scales on custom knives. If the dye is still bleeding off them give the a coat of wax. I like Renaissance wax.

Da Tink is da man ! If anyone ever told you that you couldn't do something, you must have proved them wrong right fast.

I'm interested in seeing you continue this experiment on other frames. You did a fine job on these.

awesome job... I actually like the right grip panel best... has a more "worn" look to me... I had an old S&W #2 that someone had chopped up long ago, was shot loose & really just good for a shadow box gun... but it had some beef bone grips someone had made over it's long life... I sold off the gun to someone wanting to make a shadow box... I should have kept the grips, & found a replacement set before I sold it, as the grips were interesting...
