I’m bringing this discussion back to the top. Got busy building front sights and never got a chance to circle back to this thread. It was an excellent discussion and my thanks to all my friends who contributed. It’s time for an update! Pray tell, what rifle news have you?

It all depends bud. One of my all time favorite chambering is the 375H&H. Super versatile. I like lighter rifles for packing that are capable of long range accuracy. Which means they handle like a big rifle but don’t weigh you down. When we recently went through what to take Elk hunting and knowing the shot could be a little bit of a stretch, I chose to build Gabriel a 300Win mag. We used a Pierce titanium action, Manners stock with cheek piece. Trigger tech trigger, carbon fiber proof barrel and titanium muzzle brake. The scope is a tangent theta 5-25. Even using the big 2.5 pound scope for the best glass, gun still weighs under 10 pounds. He has a rifle that he can hunt pretty much anywhere in lower 48 now. Groups are exceptional and it handles incredibly well. We have NULA and they weigh about 5lb 14oz scoped. But we are going to build some future ones in the Defiance anTi actions. I have some Manners EC stocks on order that weigh 16-17 ounces. Look great too. Classic look. I have them coming for a standard chambering build.. and a long action as well. It all comes down to what you want it for.

Make mine a .308. All day, every day. 18 to 20 inch barrel. Kevlar stock. Leupold 3-9X. Maybe a straight 6X. Probably Rem Mdl. 7 action with an extractor upgrade, but maybe a Win. 70 controlled feed short action. Similar to my thinking as well for a perfect bolt gun. The one I’m Building currently is a .308 Sporter Mauser (have a thing for controlled feed and big extractor…), 20” bbl, getting a walnut stock and a 3x9 scope. VERY generally speaking, if I’m shooting something lighter I’ll grab an AR. If I’m shooting something heavier, I’d like a falling block. This is all a moot point anyway because we all know that the perfect rifle is a 10/22.

As little rifle experience as I have, will read but have no advice to offer. I have a handed down to me Enfield/Winny 30-06 with tip over mounts. It was a cost efficient choice for my Uncle to hunt the family camp in the middle of the Allegheny Forest years ago. Bore is now rough, scope swapped, sling replaced. I've taken a deer with it. A Lyman .54 Mountain Rifle that has killed a few deer with a patched round ball. Am currently trying to bond with a little Savage Axis2 350 Legend carbine. Perfect ? Ha ! Seek perfection safely, good hunting to y'all. Oh, of course I have a 10/22.

As I can hunt deer with a benchrest rifle if I choose, I don't look for lightweight. I hunt (rarely now) from tower stands that could double as tiny houses.
My last build 6ish years ago (time has flown) was a 223AI, Stiller TAC30 action, Bartlein 1-7 twist 27.5" then brake, Manners T5A with a PT&G DBM, Jewell tigger (of course), Nightforce 8-32 NXS, and built by LRI. It's probablby 11 pounds all up and kicks so hard I can spot my own trace. I will say it's not as accurate as some rifles I own, but it can stay inside 2" at 600. Not a hunting rifle but I suppose our huge deer in SC would be impressed.
Just coming back around to rifles, I'm blown away at all of the new actions that are available and a couple or three new cut rifled barrel makers. I'm more old school and like layed up fiberglass/carbon than chassis stocks though.

My all around bigger game gun was built many years ago and is still doing the job. Custom Mauser 98, previously was my 25-06. Bolt face opened up to magnum and a Douglas premium .338 barrel screwed on, #5 contour, pillar bedded into a McMillan stock, Finlite configuration, currently wears a Burris Veracity 2-10x, parkerized. It is my let’s get serious about hunting,I don’t care what the weather is. It was built back before cheap accurate rangefinders, and the only good bullets for penetration were Nosler Partition or Barnes X, so velocity was used to compensate for misjudged yardage. 338WinMag, shot many Nosler 210gr. Partitions, currently runs Hornady 230gr. ELDX or 225gr. Partitions.

I have no argument for a perfect rifle, but this 9.3x62 is pretty well rounded. I trued a Mauser 98 action and screwed in a select match grade Shilen barrel. It shoot exceptionally well for a big bore. Hits hard too. I have a lot of rifles, ranging from hyper-fast .22's to a .585 Nyati and a .50 BMG. However, this 9.3 is my favorite sporting rifle. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I have that exact rifle sitting new and unfired for at least 4 years in my safe out together by GAP with Manners stock on Md7 action with M16 extractor. Doubt I’ll ever use it honestly but it’s a nice rifle!

For me currently, it's this early Rem700 LTR / .308, from Robert Gradous. Factory fluted, varmint profile 20" bbl, w/ 12" twist. Handles 168 AMAX just fine. Vortex has been replaced w/ a Leupold VX-3, but a Zeiss is on the wish list.

My perfect rifle is my 270 Remington BDL I received for a high school graduation present, over 30 years ago. Over the years I have had a synthetic stock fitted to it as well as a custom trigger, but that is it. The rifle has been with me on countless hunts in Texas and New Mexico. I even used it to take a nice mule deer in Idaho. I have lost count how many animals I have taken with the rifle. The only changes I am looking to make is update the 20 year old Bausch & Lomb Elite scope to a Swarovski 6i 2.5-15 and possibly have a wood stock made for it.

I'm sure earlier in this thread, I posted a picture of my Ruger Scout Rifle with a custom stock, in .308... & while in times, recovering after a shortage, .308 / 7.62, factory ammo gets easier to find than in the "other" calibers... but if you're planning ahead there are many calibers I prefer more... right now my Browning Stainless Stalker in 338 Win Mag, with BOSS has been getting my love... added a new Osprey scope & a 20 MOA base... I keep at least 500 rounds of factory ammo, & keep about 100 handloads I'm currently playing with, in combination with the BOSS, & hoping to find a good combination for 200-600 yards
if distances like I listed above are not needed... it's hard to fault a good lever gun... I love all 4... 357, 45 Colt, 45-70, & 50 A.E... I'd love to add a 480 Ruger to this group
