Congrats on your new toy, OP. It looks awesome. Should be very accurate.
My 617 dates back in 1995. It is a 4" gun that I bought new and really like. Put in a 100+ rounds of DA practice in with it this week.

My first postimage.org test. A S&W model 17 with 8 3/8" barrel Prescut anyone notice the author's name? Trooper oval hammer; another great .22 Trooper beautiful grips and the Dan Wesson heavy lug .22 with 8" barrel Nice Pistols. John D. Rockefeller was the Oil Tycoon,,, hope there was not a misunderstanding. If it is the same John W. Rockefeller, that I know about he was an Engineer and did write some. He was a distant relative if I do remember correct.

Had it out at a silhouette match Sunday, shot 11/40, standing with open sights. Plenty of room for improvement but I think the gun is up to the task. Yes that gun is up to the task. If it were mine I would try some different ammo, and I would be measuring the rims on such ammo. The gun will truly tell you what it prefers. I have stated this before on this forum, that you do not need to buy a rim gauge from Hornady or others. You can use a 223 case and calipers or I prefer a setup that employees a dial caliper for I feel that is more accurate. Fermin suggested the "Accurasizer" tool from Paco Kelly. I have one and use it. But I do not suggest it for this particular application. I use mine more for rifles and also my Ruger Bisley. The latter being used almost strictly for hunting. The tool does enhance the performance of ammo of certain types. But if you purchase Eley ammo you most likely will not need to do anything to the noses or bullets. But even their ammo and Federal (Ultra match? ) it is best to check Rim Thickness, and categorize the rounds. Next step is to find out what Gun likes. I used to shoot Smallbore (Rimfire) Silhouette. This does make a difference. Purchasing the plastic case for the ammo is expensive in some respects. But you can also buy a plastic boxed ammo such as CCI or the Browning in the 100 round, hard plastic boxes ( sliding top) and empty out the ammo for your plinking chores or Grandchildren? Children etc, etc. Then label the said box for your competition ammo. Do this and I believe your score will jump.

Well, since this thread has been revived after 2 years, I think I will add to my story about what was my favorite shooter the 8 3/8" SW Model 17 with target grips.
IT WAS STOLEN.
The case it was in, walked off somewhere between my hotel room and the car. It also had my SW Model 48 with 8 3/8".
Prescut I'm looking to replace it.

being a not so good revolver shooter, ( But Improving) , You sure nailed one of my common problems !, Looking away from the sights to see where the bullet land's. I have ruined many a real nice string that way. ...tj

Big NO NO. Shooter takes care of the sights and the trigger, bullet takes care of the target. While the mind rides the bullet to the target, the eyes do not! David Bradshaw
