Ended up ordering a 686 SSR.
I know, I know... I'm gambling a bit on QC with a mint gun sight unseen, but it's a gamble I took due to slim pickings around here, me traveling all over the greater Sacramento area looking for one, money burning a small hole in my wallet, and the fact I've read of great CS stories in which guns had to be returned to S&W, some of which come back even better than anticipated due to it being looked over (in theory) by a more discerning eye with it having been returned in the first place.
I'm excited. Put a downpayment down and will pay the rest once the serial arrives in store, then 10 days thereafter I'll be the rightful owner.
No V-Comps available... There were two last time I did the LGS trex in the greater Sacramento area, but that wasn't the determining factor at the end of the day and I'm happy. I recall days as a pre-teen when my granddad taught me flinch drills on a no dash 686, but I gave that 686 to my cousin, an upstanding gun owner and semi-enthusiast in his own right, having always carried it for his Sierra Nevada hills "roughing-it trips" when he was a young man, with me being in charge of the guns once my granddad passed. As much as I'd love to have that one back, given he's a brother to me, I have 2% regrets.
But all in all, I was introduced to the TRR8 during all my search, which is a platform i've only casually read about but never really considered. Now I'm keen because it's so versatile a platform, even if not for defense, and every one I handled (3ea) was sharp! So yeah, more money... Might have to be a late 2018 purchase at this juncture given the unconstitutional CA roster just to secure and enjoy, and then casually get back into SA as I'd feel pretty content with my DA inventory at that point.
