Very enjoyable read; thanks for that. Was this your first handgun kill? 2012 was the first, or should I say, the year of firsts- First time hunting in nearly 20 years. First handgun hunt. First day of the season. First deer I saw after a 10-hour sit. 130-class 9-point. First shot, down and out. Dragged it out in the dark with a ruck and treestand strapped to my back and the coyotes yipping and swirling just out of range of my rapidly fading headlamp. But that's another story...

That sounds like another one worth hearing.

Great write up & that Python served you well. Sticking it out in the cold creates character, at least that's what I always told my kids. Not sure I still believe it. I'm pretty sure you'll be back out there as soon as possible, good job!

One can only hope that you write a book, as it would prove to be a boon companion come a winters evening in front of the fire. It wouldn't much matter what the content involved, your prose is enchanting of itself.

As a handgun hunter,, I could close my eyes & relate to all you wrote. It doesn't matter if it's a big buck, or an average doe. It's the feeling of being out there,,, hunting,, as our ancestors did. They did so for the need of meat,, and we do it now for the want of meat, and to connect with our earthly feelings. I have taken many whitetails with a handgun,, including 2 this year. Both of mine this year, so far,, are does. But the freezer doesn't know the difference,,, nor does the dinner plate. I have today & tomorrow to conclude my deer season, and today I'm butchering the second one. I may slip out later this afternoon & see if "just one more" will allow me the chance.
But your deer, the way you shared the story,, all goes to show that we hunters are exactly opposite of what the liberal, anti-hunting types think we are. An excellent read!
