I’ve decided to get a John Ross 500, can’t decide which finish I want. He still has some available, in either all stainless or a kind of pinto, matte black frame and barrel, stainless cylinder, hammer, trigger, etc. I’d like the pinto, but I wonder how durable the black finish is. If it’s the same crap that S&W put on the 25-7 then I’m not interested.
Anyone have experience with one of these?

Thanks, I talked to Mr Ross this morning and ended up ordering a black one.
I have owned three 500s before, a 4 inch, a 6 1/2 inch, and a 7 1/2 inch Performance Center gun. The 6 1/2 was close to what I wanted, but I hate the extra noise and blast from the porting. I liked the 4 inch gun too, and would have kept it if I could have done away with the comp.
I'm not looking for max loads, I've just always wanted a 50 cal revolver. And at $1500 the JR500 is much easier on the checkbook than the custom Rugers.
I plan to burn a lot of Trail Boss in it, if I can get a 440-450 to 1000 fps that's all I want. I ordered a bunch of brass, and bullets from Midway and Matt's.

I didn't find a website detailing these and since I'm not up on .50 cal revolvers, what makes them different from the regular S&W offering?

Gunblast has a review on the JR500. The details are
Performance Center Gun 5 inch barrel 1:10 twist to better stabilize heavy bullets no compensator or porting. available in black with stainless cylinder, or satin stainless

Thanks! That’s an interesting set up with the muzzle nut in place of the comp.

Warhawk...I can't believe you cost me this much money!
Of course, I was going to piss the money away on a BFR .454, so I guess it's a wash. Talked to John this morning and ordered one...we're also talking about filming the Rich Davis bowling pin match in June for SHOOTING GALLERY 2019...they have a "Big Push" class for .44 Magnum to .500 Magnum, where you have to knock the pins something like 14 feet to clear the table. Big ole lead softballs should do the trick.
Besides, I have a Ruger .454...

Just a note...I spoke with Rob Leahey at SIMPLY RUGGED about holsters, and he said he's done them for these guns before. That'll be my first choice. I'm going to speak to Ken Null next week...he did John's original holster.

I spent several hundred more on dies, brass, bullets, etc. Badmans Bullets has some powder coated 50s that are tempting. He has the same bullet without the PC. www.badmanbullets.com/OnlineStore/products.php?cat=50+Caliber+Polymer+Coated+BulletsI’m thinking a chest holster is the way to go with this monster. Jim

Well, John's cashed my check, so the gun can't be far behind! I will note that my Sweetie, when going through the December checks, said, "What on earth did you buy?" She's a 3-Gun shooter...no room to talk, I'd say!
Luckily, I have one of the early .500 S&W's and am set up on brass, bullets and dies (although those Badman Bullets look pretty interesting).
I've got a couple of Rob's holsters set up with his "Chesty Puller" chest rig, and they work well. I also have a Diamond D Guide's Choice chest holster for a Redhawk that's very nice. Survival Sheath Systems makes and absolutely superior Kydex chest holster, and I believe Robert makes a version for the long barreled .500 Magnum. I'll drop him a note and see if he can tinker one up.
Actually, I'm glad you reminded me about John's guns. We have a big industry round table every year, and I was shooting the S&W 3 1/2 inch .500, which I kinda liked...although I scared the S&W guy to death when I started cranking out double action shots pretty quickly! I'd also been looking at the 6-inch half-lug .500, which is a pretty nice gun.
Also, thank you for the kind words on the shows and website! I have one of the great scam jobs in the world.

Michael B I haven’t gotten mine yet either. But Mr Ross did confirm that he had received the payment and the FFL. Now all I can do is wait. I haven’t decided on leather for it, probably a chest rig.

I picked up mine last week. Mr Ross has been dealing with some health issues. Give him a call, that’s the best way to reach him.
