Another fan here of the 17. I picked up one several years ago at the SAR show in Phoenix. It has the 8 3/8" barrel and a target grip with the thumb ledge.
I take a dozen different pistolas every time I go out, but that 17 always goes. I love shooting 100 yard steel with it. The accuracy is astounding.
I'm always looking for a 17 for first time shooter friends. I can't imagine a better starter handgun. You can give to your grandkids 50 years from now.

I gave my wife a K-22 when we were newly married. All this talk of K-22's got me curious, so I got it out and looked at it. It is still in really good shape and in a floral carved holster like skeeter is pictured wearing by his mailbox. The serial number was K408XX. I think that puts it around late 1947. What say you? Am I mistaken on the date of Manufacture?

Very nice gun...
I have two, a 1952 with the tapered barrel and target hammer and a 70s vintage that I had a .22 Magnum cylinder fitted to.
Does anyone know when S&W went from the tapered barrel to the full profile barrel? I was thinking it was about 1956/7 but in looking at the OPs 1954 it appears to have the full profile barrel and bright blue finish. Looked in the Standard Catalog of S&W but didn't give a date...
If you are only going to have one .22 revolver this would be the one...

I have had a K-22 since the late 1960's. I scraped blistered paint off my father's house one summer to earn it. He had a spray painter and painted it himself. The work was well worth it for the gun.
A while back, I bought a pre-Model 17. It was built in 1938 or 1939. Does not have the rib on the barrel. The action has a longer hammer throw. Otherwise, they are pretty much identical. The accuracy of the new and the old is identical. I know that they both can shoot better than me. Great guns.
I also have a couple of K-38's that are just as accurate. I have passed on several K-32's through the years because the prices were too high to begin with (for me anyway) and have gotten higher faster than my salary. But, I have several other guns in .32 Long and .32 Mag. All fun.

Lots of history here with this gun as I assumed there would be. Finally picked it up yesterday:

That's absolutely gorgeous. Luv those long barrels. Mine has wonderful target grips. It shoots out to 100 yards with accuracy.

It looks like someone put custom grips on it. They look very nice.

I don't care who you are that is one classic revolver you gotta like! I'm no Smith fan, but the Model 17 and model 14, K22 and K38 masterpiece are two revolvers that were in my opinion done perfect. Very nice, enjoy.

Sierra those aren't the grips in the first pics, what's the story? Looks like KB's.
