Today was the last day of the early bull hunt & a local kid happened to get "sick" & missed school & took off on an elk hunt all by himself. Good kid, I see him quite often & he got a dandy! A few days ago a local rancher got in touch with me & said he was having a real war with badgers, said they were tearing up the area around his barns & sheds & wanted to know if I would look into it for him. I told him I would love to Well, I got out there, located the hidden key & drove into a remote area where few people ever go. Indeed he did have a badger problem, there were holes everywhere. What I found was he had a family of badgers that had taken up residence on his place, the 2 badgers I saw were about the same size, not big but nice, well furred badgers. I got one of them & I'll go back for the others if an elk doesn't get in the way. I was going to give this one away like I always do but it's a bit small, although the claws were nice. I'll see if I can't get a bigger one in the coming days. My weapon of choice was my 8 shot Blackhawk 327 maggie using a 113 gr HP with 13 grs of H110. These are powder coated & are nasty when they whack something, badgers hate them. As usual the holster is my wonderful Barranti crossdraw. Dick

He didn't skip school, he went on a biology field trip! I remember being in a bout 4th grade and going to see the principal and telling him I was going to miss school to go hunting with my family. He looked at me for a minute then simply said bring him a package of steak when I got back! I loved growing up in a small rural town.

I can't even imagine shooting something like that at his age. You wouldn't be able to remove my smile with an angle grinder.

King6, I can remember being in high school and having the vice principal have us park our trucks and jeeps in front of his office so he could keep an eye on our shotguns while we were in class and planning on dove hunting after school, that was in a major city in Texas.
Nice bull and nice badger, I wanna see you with a cow!!!

My grandmother turned in my Dad to his school principal when he took off school to go hunting. Busted. Which I don't get because Valsetz was a small, very rural town.

I didn't find this out until years later but my next door neighbors who are both school teachers told me the story. One of my son's (Travis) skipped school with a buddy & went hunting Rock Chucks all day. The next day at school Mr. Cranor ask Travis why he was absent & Travis told him he had to go to a funeral. Mr. Cranor ask him who died & he said, Chuck, my uncle Chuck! Funny, no obituary in the paper....

In my very rural town, they used to expect opening day there would be lots of absent kids. Now hunting season starts on Saturday. Just not as much fun.

there is an Elk farm about 20 miles from here, wonder how much weight out of my wallet I'd have to trade for a 1/4 of Elk meat???

Mr. Thompson, other than the grip panels you made and Iām sure your front sight, is there any other mods you did on your .327? Iād skip a whole week of school for a chance at that!

Knowing how small Soda Springs is,,, I'd wonder if that young man wasn't kin to you & your clan. He got a nice bull,,, and did it by himself. That says a LOT about him! Tell him "Congrats" from all of us when you see him again! And I'm not surprised that a badger got you away from chasing an elk. Looks like "one down, one to go" so to speak. Excellent all around!
