The sixgun I used was an old model flat top 44 magnum with a 6 1/2" barrel. At first it was giving me some accuracy problems but after pin gauging the throats & finding them bigger than any of my other 44's I got it figured out. I'm now sizing all my bullets for that gun .432" & of course they are powder coated & have a BHN of about 8-9. I still haven't checked my notes to see how fast they are running but 10 grs of Unique with a 245 gr HP is not a hot load. I've only clocked this load in my 10 1/2" 44 Bisley that I got from Fermin so I'm not sure with this shorter tube. I'm still scratching my head about the great penetration of this soft & somewhat slow load after hitting that big shoulder bone, it actually shattered it, then the right lung, then the intestines & back to the left hind quarter. All a pleasant surprise. A one bullet result but still a positive one. I'll tweak the load just a bit in the spring as I think the gun will shoot a bit better, everything is there for good accuracy, bright shiny bore, good forcing cone, good lock up, trigger, etc. Maybe a spring bear hunt will seal the deal. David, sadly I'm married to the greatest cook in the world so when I invite friends out for a hunt, instead of carrying 2 guns we all carry 2 forks! As far as stalking goes we look like seals, our bellies are on the ground but our heads are 15" higher so we can see over the cover. Not sure if that's an advantage or disadvantage but we do what we have to. It's almost 1pm here as I write this and I'm guessing a lot of bull elk have hit the ground by now, it opened today for bulls only & my buddies had 12 bulls spotted. There are 2 secrets to hunting elk, you have to hunt them when they are feeding & you have to be there in the dark. If you leave camp when you can see, you're already too late, you have to be where they are in the dark, write that down if you want to be an elk hunter, they hit the timber very early. My cow hunt starts in 10 days, me & the Bisley 480 will give it our best "shot".

Dick is really a fantastic pistol shot. Especially with them way slow slugs his sixgun chunks. Ya'll gotta realize, he had to predict where that buck was going to be about an hour before he got there to fire that shot. That's the only reason the presentation wasn't quite right.... Dick had that buck predicted for a perfect broadside double lung shot but that little buck got to smellin' him some huckleberry breath and was nose forward towards Dick when he walked into that old slug. Dick just shoots them slugs fast enough for them to not tumble. He's gotta cast em' soft, otherwise they will stick in his barrel. It's really the only reason I sent him that old 10 inch sixgun. I knew he would have to shoot a stouter load to get the bullet out of that longer barrel!

Sounds like I've been "outed" The Dawg busted me! Actually with those slow loads I can cheat a little bit, I just pull the trigger harder & that boosts velocity just enough to clear the barrel, other wise they would stick. Got the first coat on a nice set of Turkish walnut tonight, I've got to get shooting the 480 right away for my upcoming elk hunt. I'm sure some of my buddies whacked bulls today but no cell phone coverage where they are camped. Also, if anyone has a HP 41 mold made by Miha I sure would be interested!! Looking for something in the 230 gr Keith or LFN range if possible. I don't even know if he's made a run of 41 HP's.

I am pretty sure I only have the lightweight ones. I will take a look tomorrow and make sure. We need to talk about that Paper Micarta anyway.

I have a MiHec 41 HP mould. Its looks like a classic Keith but I don't know the weight offhand. I have a Ranch Dog mould that I believe is 260 something that my Bisley absolutely loves.

There's something magical about the 260 grain class bullets in the 41 Magnum. My buddy Al Anderson had some he was shooting at a rock some 640 yards out along with another long range pistolero buddy of ours. I walked up and Al offered me a shot. Well Sir, it was a 7 1/2" Bisley NM so I held some less holdover than I usually did with a heavy loaded 44 and trimmed my wind hold a trifle and squeezed one off. Dang thing hit just about center. Offhand. They hand been working from seated back rest. They looked at me like I was all kinds of lucky and I smugly gave the 41 back and walked away...

Dick,
have you ever tried the cup point?
I haven't cast or tested any yet but my thinking on it is with a soft alloy it would expand a little more than a solid yet not so much that you'd shear off any lead if you hit bone.

A lot of good info above and a couple of quote worthy lines too. "I like my blood trails short and heavy" and "squeeze like your taking a babies pulse". Golden stuff right there.

Looks like it behaved like a Nosler partition. Mushroom, shed the pedals, the rest of it keeps on going.

Looks like it behaved like a Nosler partition. Mushroom, shed the pedals, the rest of it keeps on going. You're not the first one to notice and comment on that design feature. Note the HP pin sets you get with MP molds... they are different depths. You can regulate the amount of expansion that way. The less depth gets you less expansion OR higher velocity with less expansion.

Be pretty hard to do Dick, with a cinnamon roll in one hand and a huckleberry shake in the other...
