400 Colt Magnum sounds interesting. Has anyone done it as a custom? Sort of.....10mm formed on 30-30 is pretty much a 401 PowerMag. In fact, the Colt round mics to within a few thousandths of a 401 Herter. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Digging around to find out about these guns I found this old thread from way back. I have now seen a .41 Python, it's at a shop in Omaha and they usually run their auctions on gunbroker so I expect it will show up there soon. Didn't see any drag marks on the cylinder, barrel is marked PYTHON 41 and under that it's got a caliber designation for .41 Magnum. Had never seen anything like it, very well finished from what I saw of it.

Groo here If Colt made one , people would complain the cylinder was too short to handle the heaver long nose 41 boolets. I have a 41 mag made up on a Ruger New Vaquero , and the max length is about 1.60in. Suits me fine . Ps. It's a Horvath and no you can't have it!!!]

This calls for another jawbone with Jerry Moran. Moran described some while back a .41 Python he made. Jerry Moran, as I recall, made ONE, test fired it and jousted it to be on the edge. My first worry would be the small BARREL TENON, and that was his concern. Don’t recall his case length. The Python has long been called a “.41 frame.” David Bradshaw

Since 30-30 brass is the way I go cobble up some loads for my Herter's 401 PM I wonder if I can start calling it a 400 Colt Magnum . It sounds so exotic .

I've got a New Vaquero .357 and the original barrel from my .41 Blackhawk, thinking I'd like a .41 SPL but figuring it'll probably have to be a Magnum.

Back in 1987 I was interested in having this conversion done on my Python. As you can see the bullet was .40 caliber and similar to the .400 Colt as pictured.

..yea, Collt blew that one again...they had developed a similar cartridge back in the 20s or 30s I think... I have seen the .400s for sale as individual rounds on GunBroker... www.gunbroker.com/item/888182407 It was being considered back in the 1960s and they dropped the ball when S&W came out with the .41 Magnum.. I'm trying to recall, there was a documented Colt .41 Python that sold at one of the big auction houses a while back..as in with a Colt Letter. It went for way over $10k... Pythons are on the Colt ".41" frame but that doesn't mean it will handle a steady diet of Magnum loads...Specials maybe...but not Mags. Bob

I am still wondering if a new Python could be converted to 10mm and if there are current moon clips that would fit it?
