Wanting to put together a load for 475 Linebaugh using the 400 grain LBT WFN. Wanting velocity to be between 1100-1200 fps.
I appreciate any help on getting this load together. Need to get some rounds down to Alan Harton so he can test fire and regulate sights.

I'm sure you can get close on that velocity if you mention what powders but it strikes me as odd to not find an accurate load for the gun first. He can give you some extra front sight and you can work it down if needed.

He's building it off a Vaquero.
I figure either HS6 or 2400 for powder but will get whatever works best to hit that number.

15.5 of HS6 will do about 1155-1170 from a 5.5" Linebaugh

Thanks zeus. I was hoping you would read this. I remembered you telling me a load you liked, but couldn't remember what it was.

15.5 did 1170 with the 385 HP from my 5.5" that I shot the bison with. With the really soft bullets, it would lead after about 20 rounds. I backed it down for later use to 14.5 and it doesn't lead very much at all. Velocity is right about 1100. Shot a few pigs with it at 1100. Same performance and on deer leave a heck of a hole. Good luck

So would a 410 gr cast performance bullet over 15 grains do HS6 sound about right?

If I go with 15 grains and end up downloading a bit, would that necessitate a taller or shorter front sight? I get confused with revolvers sometimes since it seems to work a little backwards.

While we are on the topic of 475 loads, how low have you went with HS-6 and a 375-410 gr bullet?

I had a note where I used 12.5 grains of HS6 in a 480.

By chance I had the opportunity to have a good long visit with Keechikid yesterday. Quite an impressive and accomplished young man. He is building a Dustin Linebaugh style 475 Bisley Vaquero. He originally wanted to set it up for a particular load, hence this thread. I explained to him that sixguns had the unfortunate tendency to have other ideas. I further counciled he should leave his front sight "too tall" until he had the opportunity to sit down and test a variety of cast bullet designs. I told him his new sixgun might have a clear preference or do well with a bunch of designs but the sixgun would tell him for sure. Once testing revealed a clear choice, the front sight could be filed in.
I also told him there were several guys on this board who would be happy to send him a few cast slugs to try out!

So would a 410 gr cast performance bullet over 15 grains do HS6 sound about right? I think I have some of those. Remember the contents of the alloy can vary the finished bullet weight some.
