This S&W was my Grandads, I ended up with most of his firearms but this one he told me he wanted me to have some day. It is a very special revolver to me. From what I have gathered it is a 38 M&P Model of 1905, 4th change, Target .38 Special made around 1920 Serial #3966XX My Granddad was an FBI agent and then a DA when he was a young man, he must have bought it used because on the backside of the grips there is: Bob Taylor Sheriff Office L.A.C.S.D. The holster is made by Colorado Saddlery, I googled them and they are still in business, no holsters though. Post up your old iron and tell us about it!

You need to get in touch with S&W and get a factory letter on it. They may be able to give you the date of birth, to whom it was ordered by, who it was delivered to, and what if anything is special about it.

That's a cool gun, especially since it stayed in the family all these years. That ammo stash is cool too.

My brother has my grandad's old K-38 and it still shoots as good as I can hold it.

If that old Smith could only talk I'm sure it would have some good stories to tell. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Yes Lee, I have to agree with you, it definitaley would talk, nice stories about pleasant range days, maybe some hunting trips, a little LE work maybe? I wish these old guns did have mouths.

I wish I would have talked about the revolver with my granddad when I had the chance. He passed around 27 years ago, I thought we would have had more time together back then. If you all have the opportunity to document family guns, don't let it pass.

Indeed, I inherited a trade name shotgun from my Dad, it's now incredibly beat up, bluing gone and starting to rust, will be going to the refinishers when I find a new job (hope it doesn't pit between now and then) and really wish I would have thought to ask him more about it as it has now become one of my favorite shot guns, just as it was his.
