Considering converting my Glock 21 or my Springfield Range Officer 1911 to .45 Super. What do I need to safely do this, and do you fellas recommend one over the other? I assume a heavier spring is in order and maybe a compensated barrel. Do Range Officer's have a fully supported chamber in their barrels?

I have recently tried some 185 gr Buffalo Bore in my gen 4 G21.
I was using a KKM 45acp barrel and a 20lb recoil spring.
It was quite a handful and a lot of fun. I was at an indoor range, and lets just say I got more than a couple "WTH was that?" reactions, even after I was shooting some lively 240 gr XTP's out of my 2 3/4" Redhawk.
Accuracy was very good as well, and brass didn't exhibit any smileys or anything weird.
I would think the Range Officer would be an even better cantidate, but I am not intimately familliar with it (how tight or well supported the chamber is etc).

Is .45 Super the one that uses a SR primer in an ACP size case?

Is .45 Super the one that uses a SR primer in an ACP size case? No, that's .45 SMC. Pretty much the same thing if I understand right. Just uses the Small Rifle Primer.

. 45 super is dimensionally the same as. 45 acp, just runs at higher pressure. Yes, a heavier recoil spring is needed. A ramped barrel, although offers more support, isnt really necessary. If you want to step up even more,. 460 rowland. Great round!

As I recall, Ace Hindman made a series of changes to 1911s when developing the 45 Super with Dean Grennell & Tom Ferguson. The firing pin hole in the slide was bushed, and a 38 Super firing pin fitted rather tightly. This was to reduce or prevent the primer flowing into a loosely fit std spec firing pin hole, and tying up the gun. The firing pin stop was replaced with a square bottom version with the lower edge barely broken to slow the initial slide travel as the slide moves rearward. A tightly fitted ramped barrel with a fully supported chamber (often debated), and a stout recoil spring, the exact weight of which still seems to be debated, but 30 lbs seems to have been the original spec. There is a 45 Super website, and more specific information would be available there. The original cases were cut down 451 Detonics cases, which in turn were cut down 45 Winchester Magnum cases.
The world of high performance 45 autos is a scary place at times, for top end performance also check out the 45-08, a shortened 308 Winchester case, and inside neck reamed!

Anyone ever shot 45 super in a 625 S&W?? I've shot one that was rechambered to 460 Rowland. The recoil was about spirited, sort of low-end 44 magnum-ish. The guns owner paid Clarks to extend the chambers slightly for the conversion. It was interesting, but I must confess I've shot some stiff 45 AR loads that felt pretty much the same. I still run with 44 magnums myself.

I run 45 Super with a 20# recoil spring and a 6-inch, 4-port, Lone Wolf Dist. aftermarket barrel for my G21sf.
I also have a bunch of the 45 SMC ammo if anyone wants any.

I just bought a 2 port G21 Lone Wolf Barrel. I have a 20 lbs spring but will probably bump to a 22 lbs spring as that is what my G20 uses, unported. Now I'm just waiting on.45 Super brass to get here 😀

There's a huge thread in the glocktalk reloading forum on 45 super with lots of load data that may interest you. If you plan to stick with close to normal 45 super loads (IE: 185g@1300fps or 230g@1100fps) Just the recoil spring will be sufficient. You can load super level loads in regular 45 brass since you have the LW barrel btw just dont get them mixed up and placed into a 45 with less case support. Should you want to go beyond standard 45 super loads your best bet will be grabbing a threaded barrel and using a compensator. The 21 slide is pretty light and much above standard super loads slide speed becomes to great and misfeeds begin.
My personal g21 longslide uses a LW slide and 6.6" threaded barrel, large 5 port steel custom comp, and a 24lb spring. The end result is 185gr xtp's at over 1700fps up to 315gr WFN cast bullets at over 1200fps. Pretty substantial from an autoloader.

Holy crap that's intense! So far, I've not chronographed anything. I'm using the ported LWD and had some misfeeds on the higher powered loads w/a 22 lbs spring. Already installed a 24 lbs spring. At this point, that should suffice. My Rock Island Armory 1911 is converted for .460 Rowland, do if I want beyond standard .45 Super, that will be the gun to do it.
Seriously impressive velocity out of your 185s, that's some serious stuff!
