so my retired machinist buddy is getting older & some days thinks about hanging it all up ( but the only place he's really happy is in his shop )... I was talking to him one day & he expressed interest in making a set of collet dies just for the challenge... anytime he gets excited about making something, I pay attention... well... turns out he had been thinking about trying to build a set of dies for the 476 Eley... just for "the fun of it"... but he decided if he was going to make the dies, he'd need a gun to try out the dies... trouble was, finding a 475 barrel...
well I looked around & there just isn't any 475 barrel blanks around for "reasonable prices"... I posted here, & mentioned the 476 Eley, & one of our great forum members hooked me up with a link to the 480 Achilles... which I promptly printed off for my buddy... about this time I tried McGowen barrels & they agreed to make me up some 475 barrel stock... my buddy was really excited now about building for this new cartridge...
So... it looks like we are making a pair of revolvers & a pair of dies for the 480 Achilles... it's worth me funding the project, just to see him so happy & excited about working on something again I found & bought another project Ruger Blackhawk, a well used 6.5" 357, & will be using my converted 45 Colt Blackhawk for my gun ( I already have several 45 Colt guns, so this one doesn't get shot much )
here is some info on the cartridge... which is basically a heal seated 475 bullet seated into a 45 Colt case... the cylinders are bored through, with no reduced throats... I'm wondering if a gas check 475 bullet mold couldn't be used, or modified to make the heal seated bullets... during one of our talks we looked at the Lee die 476-400 that could be modified to get us what we wanted... so I have a pair of those dies, that should be here today...
