A couple months ago my adult daughter asked me if I'd teach her how to shoot because she's afraid of guns but doesn't want to be. She lives out of state but we had a visit planned for her. I did some in house basic handgun 101 stuff and a couple day later we went to the range. It was cold, about 10 above. I loaded up some low end 38's for her and also took along a few other guns including my Ruger P345 45 auto. I had some 200gr swc's loaded up. My notes say they are just over 900fps. Well, I didn't know what to expect but man did she surprise me and put a smile on dad's face! Her first 6 rnds of 38 from a rest were a 4 inch group at 15yds. She then started clanging the steel like nothin. She took to it and was having so much fun got her behind the 45. Then the fun REALLY began. She's all excited about shooting now and is no longer "afraid" of guns. I dispelled the myths and rhetoric she was inundated with by our largely anti-gun society. Here's a video of a new handgun shooter! Her first rounds ever shot. She shot the 45 just as good, maybe even better. Between the 2 guns she shout about 60rnds. Most at the 4" swinger. I'd say she hit it over 95% of the time and mostly standing. One thing I noticed at the end of the video. Her last shot with the 45 the slide didn't lock open. She then fired with no round in the chamber, you can hear the hammer fall and she has absolutely no flinch! That was at the end of the session too. I'm a proud Papa!

Great job Snyd, I like to see the ladies get started shooting & they always seem to do better than expected when somebody shows them the right way to do it, congratulations to both of you! Now, what gun are you going to buy her?

I got my daughter shooting when she was about 5-6. 7-9 even more. At age 10 she got girly on me and that was the end of that. Heck she would not even fish at 12!! All the pink guns and Barbie fishing poles finally went away this past year. Maybe I should have waited till she asked, lol. Be careful you may create a monster there. I too like to see the girls shoot. Jeff

Awesome Snyd. I've been shooting handguns for almost 40 years and don't shoot that well. You done good. And getting a new shooter excited about the sport is great.

Good shootin' -- she was obviously having a good time.
Every time my daughter comes home she asks to go to the range. She's a big 1911 fan. We run 200gr at about 800 fps on poppers -- lots of fun.

Now, what gun are you going to buy her? Dick I'm going to look in to a solid handgun course for her in where she lives. There are some women's shooting classes, etc. We talked and she likes the idea of shooting with other women and getting some training. So that's step 1. Perhaps she can get to shoot some other guns. Then well figure it out.

Good advice, I teach a ladies only handgun class every year & usually have anywhere from 12-20 ladies attend for the last 8-9 years. Some of the club members give me a hand & we put a lot of different guns on the table, they can shoot what ever they want or they can bring their own. Many have never touched a handgun in their life but they always end up have a good time & it's surprising how well most of them can shoot. Some of them share some pretty sad personal stories. I always start by asking a few questions, one is, how many of you ever carry concealed. Another question I ask is, how many of you would drive to Salt Lake City without your spare tire?

I, like many others here also teach ladies to shoot. We've been doing NRA WOT clinics for 16 years. When they come to classes,,, W/O any previous training,, and no men around,, (undue pressures) these ladies do quite well, and have a lot of fun. But,, like Dick,,, I too have heard some pretty bad stories & such. I love it when I see a lady express interest in shooting. And as noted,,, many will become excellent shooters when taught the proper methods.

Thanks guys. Ya it sure was fun watching her hit that target and hear her giggle with glee. Frankly, I thought she'd shoot a few rounds of 38 then figure she accomplished what she set out to do. Overcome her fear of guns. But, much to my surprise, and hers, she actually enjoyed it.
