For a guy that can't make a ham sammich, he sure does some fine sixgun work!

I think he almost has a smile on his face! Wouldn't you? Look at that picture... It's February, he's wearing a T-shirt & the sun is shining.

Here's a picture of the cylinder. I had never seen one this bad. Fortunately there's usually enough meat on a cylinder to get it to clean up. This one came out nicely BUT took 5 hours to get it like this. Unfortunately the mainframe has some pitting that can be minimized but won't clean up without remedial welding. g

I have not taken on a redo challenge like that in several years just due to time constraints with the business but it is very satisfying to take something like that and give it a new life.

Pretty intense looking. Did you have a before pic of the cylinder? Uh, that organized bench is a sign of a sick mind ;-) Been moving my stuff around trying to organize at the same time. I labeled and tagged everything because I know I will play heck finding things for a while. Why do I have around 100 sets of dies and only about 30 shell holders lol.
I finally bought a lathe. Going to pick it up this weekend. I figure I am not going to learn any younger. I will leave high precision things to those that do it on a regular basis. I do have a bunch of dodads and several widgets to work on though. Jeff

Jeff, I pretty much know where every thing is, at least to a point. Congrats on the lathe. A big step for sure. Keep me posted on your progress please.
No before pic, but trust me, it was pretty rough...

Can't make a ham sammich? I figured the man just slaps a loaf of bread on either side of a live East Texas hog and forgets about the chips! Looking good Fermin.

How or what do you use to clean up the flutes with out washing out either end? I admire folks with patience and ability to clean up iron that nicely.

Nice work. Had to chuckle at the light, I can't seem to get it close enough or bright enough the older I get.

How or what do you use to clean up the flutes with out washing out either end? I admire folks with patience and ability to clean up iron that nicely. You can use a variety of tools, you can re cut the flutes on the mill, you can use tool maker stones ground to match the radius, or you can use a rotary power tool, but if you do that last you better have complete control over it or you will wash out the edges. It does take some elbow grease and a shot of patience with a big dollop of stubborness mixed in.

Since someone asked for a before picture, here is a couple of pics of the hammer before. As you can see, it is pretty rough. Actually the whole Colt was in about the same shape. What you have to do is save it one part at a time. The side: The top.
