I have a few revolvers in calibers ranging from 22 magnum to 500 JRH. I'm really wanting to get another revolver and the 45/70 BFR keeps coming to mind, from what I've read allot of people really like them and with components for the 45/70 easy to find that's another plus in my opinion.
If you have a 45/70 BFR and like to share experiences and load data I would be happy to hear.

I've had one for about eight years. The guns are large, but very accurate and fun to shoot.
There are several power levels in most manuals. The paperwork that came with mine stated that Ruger loads were acceptable. Others have said Marlin loads were the top. Personally I stick with the 28,000 psi loads. Can't imagine anything they won't kill.
I highly recommend the 45-70 BFR if you want a specialized revolver that's fun to shoot.

Not being critical, but with the packability of say a .475L or .500L what is the advantage or draw to the giant odd looking .45-70 revolvers?

I think, as Encore64 stated, shooting it for fun is the big draw. Keeping loads to 28k psi and "plinking" with a 400+ grain hunk of lead is a blast. I imagine some people may hunt with these, just for the fun of it as well, despite the added weight and heft.
I'm happy with my 480 Ruger SBH and SRH, but that doesn't mean others can't enjoy the larger, heavier revolvers. Someday that 500 JRH may show up for me, but it's a not a "must have" in my book, either.
I love hearing about others' experiences with the huge variety of firearms available. Some I like, and some I won't buy because of personal preferences... but clearly there are people continuing to buy them or MRI wouldn't keep making them.

But, this question always irks me. Most of what the guys on the forum do is pure art. Its not about need, but I think we need guys just like we have. Does Lee Martin and Gary Reeder need to defy odds and show bottleneck cartridges work in revolvers? Does Fermin Garza need to spend weeks welding and filing to recreate Keith's classics? Does Doc need to tool leather to make beautiful holsters or Zane make grips from exotic woods? Nylon and plastic work just fine, right? This isn't about need, but I think we need these guys because they show us better ways to be us.

Yeah they're big and clunky, but they're cool. A revolver chambered in that big cartridge is a bit of a novelty, but the things really do shoot well. Mine is exceedingly accurate.

I wish I could get them to make me one in .50-90 Sharps, but with the bullet being .510, I doubt that will come to pass. That or a .458 Win Mag. Novelty? Yes. Stupid? Maybe. Do I give a f**k? Nope. No f**KS given.

Is it fun to shoot?

They're just a bit much too much, however, the BFR makes a great (and better) platform than the D-Max that mine was built on.
