No reason to dump the M69. It can be downloaded to 38 level and is substantial and easy to shoot for one(38spec). Matts Bullets has 135gr and 165 gr bullets available. No, I'm not getting rid of my 69 or 2 29's. My plan is to start with my little SP101 with the light target wadcutters I have and work my way up. I've determined to do all I can. If worse comes to worse my son will get some nice .44's to play with. Best case scenario is I conquer this thing and enjoy some big bores and one day getting my Elmer Keith on shooting rocks across a canyon with sixshot or a jack rabbit down in CC with the Ferminator.

It's my thought that the M69 with downloaded or deepseated downloaded rounds will be easier to shoot than a smaller revolver. I continue to like 3 different jacketed HP's on 10grs of CFE Pistol powder here. Sounds like you'll want to go some lighter yet. So onto cast..

Cast bullet, 200-240gr, el cheapo, whatever you want. A big jug of TrailBoss. You'll be shooting those 44's with the ease of the 38. If you want, you can slow 'em down and watch the bullet sail towards the target!

Watching a bullet fly is one thing. Hearing, distinctively, Pop, thmpt, thud, of gun-paper-dirt is quite the interesting day at the range!
I hope you pursue this! The quest for accuracy is like the quest for perfection! It continues!

I'm in a similar boat. First, I'm NOT a recoil junkie & have to work up to shooting my .41Mag "hunting" loads. Second, I don't get near enough trigger time to maintain the level of proficiency that I would like. Third, my previously 20-10 vision went straight off a cliff once I hit 40. Couple that with arthritis in both hands & I have to FOCUS & work my butt off to maintain any kind of accuracy.
I'm wondering how much 2 years straight on mefloquine had to do with the onset of my eyesight issues, but that's a story for another time...
Anywho, what works well for me is to warm up with rimfires. That way, I can just relax, focus on the basics & get my "headspace & timing" right, before stepping up to the bigger boys. My 6.5" .357 BH is a pussycat (to me), even stoked to the gills, but my 5.5" .41 Bisley BH can be a handful with hot loads & if I haven't worked my way up to that level, will start me flinching. If I start flinching/yanking/jerking at any point during a range session, I simply take a smoke break, calm down a bit, pick up one of the .22s & get my s**t back together, before going back to the big boys.
Now that I've finally got a .41 BisHunter in my grubby, (not so) little mitts, I'm determined to check off another bucket list item & take a whitetail with a handgun. My plan/goal for this year is to start every range session with the Single Ten, focus on the fundamentals & when I'm happy with my shooting, grab the .357. When I'm shooting that to my satisfaction, I'll then step up to the .41s.
Past history tells me I do NOT like .44Mag at "magnum" levels, but that I couldn't quit giggling after shooting a bud's 5.5" .45 Colt BH, slinging 260s at 1275fps or so (haven't shot one any hotter than that). I like the idea of hotrod magnums, but have found I just don't enjoy shooting them & that a "Ruger only" level .41 is about as much as I want to hang on to.

I've backed off from full tilt 454's, etc, for many of the reasons listed in this thread. Most notably, my wrists and the attendant arthritis. It's not the backward push, or violent slam, as the case may be, but the upward, torqued "flip" that does me in. So I sold my 44 mags, my 454's.
So anything above 357 mag, etc, goes to 44 Special to 25k psi, 45 Colt to about 15-23k psi, and then up to 480 Ruger with a ~400 grain slug at about 1100 fps. On heavy recoiling guns, I find the harder I try to hold on, especially with a two-handed hold, the worse off it is for my wrists. I started shooting my 480 SBH one-handed and found the recoil was somehow spread out over the entire length of my arm, not just focused right there on my weak/pained wrist.
My thinking on caliber is to replace velocity with an increase caliber. Stop my 45 caliber 250-265 grain bullets at about 1000 fps, the 44 Special 250 at about 1150 fps... forget the 454 with a 300 @ 1600 fps (Ouch!) and go with a .476" slug at 900 - 1000 fps. Accuracy improves, too, by ridding the mind of impending pain to my wrists.

Sounds like a good plan to me Doug. I was conversing with Rob Leahy a few weeks ago about seeing his Cuda rig and Chesty Puller rig being used on the tv show Alaska: The Last Frontier and my surprise of seeing Atz carrying a 1911 instead of a big double or single action revolver. Rob said there's been some successful taking of bears with the old .45 acp as of late. His comment was big and slow in capable hands will do the job. So yes, your idea of make em bigger and slow em down is a good one I reckon.
