I checked my scale with a Lyman weight set the other day. The scale was .5 grain off. What I thought was a 5.0 grain load was actually 4.5 grain load. How common is this?

Dust and other residue can impact accuracy especially with a balance beam scale. I routinely clean mine about every couple of months. The dust can affect the balance pivot. Also I've had issues with a stable platform to set the scale on when weighing and checking. Fans, air conditioning etc. will all affect accuracy.

I always balance my RCBS 10-10 scales before reloading. If it gets moved just a little bit it can make the weights off. It has its own weight to check with . Always has been dead on when it is balanced first.

I keep my scales under a hard plastic cover to keep them clean. Plus,, I calibrate & adjust with my check weight often. Best way to prevent problems.

I cleaned the scale, the pivot points and balanced the beam. I had to add a small piece of shot to balance the the beam. I thought that was possibly the problem, wrong. I checked the scale with my weight set. I have to set the scale at 5.5 grains to balance the 5 grain weight. I added weights up to around 50 grains and the discrepancy was consistently .5 grain. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

That puzzles me that it would consistently be off .5 over that large a scale. I would think it would be off a percentage. So that as the weight went up the error would be larger. Hmmm.

I have checked it with a set of scale weights made by Lyman. I checked several weight settings and when I take it up to 50-60 grains it is between .4-.5 grain off.

Easy then, add .5 grains of solder to the bottom of the pan.

just to be sure... you tried adjusting the foot through it's full range of motion to get the beam to balance???

I balance the beam with no problem. I was throwing light 3 grain loads and checked my scale with my set of weights. I put 3 grains of weights in the pan and to balance I had to add .5 grain on the beam.

The scale is an RCBS 5 0 5 and I wanted to check the scale another way. I have a couple of Lee dippers so I checked and found a chart made by Lee. Using Bullseye with both dippers the scale accurately weighed the charges, giving the same weight as the chart indicated. My scale check set is evidently off.
