Last year I was bitten by the .327 Federal Bug...there is no apparent cure....  At this point three have invaded he gunsafe... FA/97, 3" Ruger SP-101 and a LCR... What I would like at this point is a 6" barreled K-Frame DA revolver... I have a doner gun that should make this conversion pretty straight forward...it is a S&W Model 53 that has both the .22 Jet and Rimfire cylinders. In addition the original barrel burned out as I shot enough Jet through it to turn the forcing cone into a funnel. If I use the original barrel and Rimfire cylinder for the conversion at a later date the gun could be restored to .22 Jet, just the Rimfire cylinder would be unavailable for use... All that would have to be done is rebore the barrel and rechamber the Rimfire cylinder... So my question is who would you use for a smith for the conversion...someone who could get it done in less than a year.... Thanks...Bob |

Two of the posters over on the S&W Forums had .327s done by Mr. Horvath... Spoke with him on the phone and the project is now a go... Only problem is that he will have to make a barrel as the only person who did reboring passed away...

I remember Alan Harton mentioned that there was more than just the guy that Hamilton Bowen used who can rebore revolver barrels.

MARCH 15, 2016 | CATALOG REVISION — Effective May 1st 2016, we will no longer accept S&W revolver projects and will take down the S&W catalog section. A great many of our S&W offerings involve barrel work, particularly sight and caliber conversion. More and more of the newer guns have barrels set so tightly that the factory service department refuses to remove them because of the risks of receiver damage. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know when guns are suitable candidates for barrel removal until you put a barrel wrench to one. Due to the untimely loss of friend and colleague Jim Dubell who did our reboring, we also have a considerable backlog of S&W caliber conversions to address as we are able to get barrels rebored; these are our top priority. We also expect to concentrate more on our parts business. With a couple of new machine shops hard at it now on our behalf, the sight and part situation is improving which will enable us to bring on line some needed new sight parts.

I am wondering if they meant to say "unable" to get barrels rebored....

...as much as I wanted to go with Andy, when I called Mr. Huntington he stated he could rebore my extra barrel so the gun would stay completely factory... So it's packed with a deposit check and will go out tomorrow.

Called Mr. Huntington yesterday to make sure the gun got there...it did and was told the barrel would be going to be rebored today...
I didn't ask when it would be done...I've found they get back sooner than you expect that way...

Thee months and a few days and it's back...     Jack did a beautiful job... He ended up having to machine off the shoulder of the barrel so it could threaded further into the frame because the Jet rounds had super heated and eroded the end of the barrel too much so there was too much cylinder gap... Other than that the project went pretty smooth... Should be shooting it soon... Bob |
