Alaskan454's thread Anyone Else Shoot These? has fired up a dormant element of my powder burning affliction. I've never shot PPC and I don't see myself shooting it in the future either but I find the revolvers fascinating to look at. I have one more AR project to round up parts for and possibly one more special handgun. After that the plan is to focus on revolvers that interest me and putting together a Contender pistol rig. With the decline of PPC competition in favor of other action shooting games I'm thinking about either picking up someones no longer used S&W or maybe trying my hand at putting one together. Besides Brownells and Midway, where else should I look for parts like the heavy barrels, rib sights etc? Or is it now a case of looking for NOS parts at online auctions and WTB ads across the 'net? And feel free to post pics of your competition revolvers of any flavor. Ideas and something to drool over are always appreciated! Thanks!

Ask for the revolvers built for NRA action too... They can be very PPC like with added optics!

if I were going to compete with a double action revolver... these 2 would be my 1st 2 choices, this old S&W was my FIL's Highway Patrol buddies competition gun, he was state champion for many years shooting this one... it has hands down the best trigger I've shot... this S&W 610 was sent back to S&W 4 times for headspace issues before I even shot it... the 1st 3 times they never did anything with the headspace, but they futzed with the trigger each time... after finally getting the headspace issue straightened out on the 4th time back, it's now got the 2nd best trigger I've shot... pictured on the bottom here... anyone know if fiber optic sights are OK in the stock classes??? this one is now chambered for 10 MM Magnum, but might work well with 40 S&W for faster moon clip reloads after those two... it would go to my GP-100 ...or one of my Alaskans ( either 454 or 480 ) just for fun... those guns would all fall into the open sight class... I do have a few autos that might work in the more adsvanced classes though...

I've never shot a PPC match, but I do like the guns! I have a 6" model 64, I believe, that is amazingly accurate. This is a more recent addition: 4" heavy barrel with a great trigger. And I paid about the price of a standard Smith! Maybe less. The short barrel makes it a little more practical versus the heavy 6" gun.

Keep em' coming, I love these older S&Ws set-up for PPC. If I ever run across a good deal on one I would have a hard time passing it up. Mojo Customs does full PPC builds, he has some pretty cool pictures of both old and new guns on his page: www.facebook.com/Mojo-Custom-Guns-499943136769886/If I wasn't such a cheap *** I would pay him to build me something, but there are so many used ones needing a good home!

Definitely shop for a used one! They pop up occasionally for a fraction of the cost to build it. Like I said above, I paid the price of a shooting condition Smith 38 and I got a crazy accurate competition gun with a great trigger. That sight rib alone costs about 1/3 of what I paid for the whole thing!
If you don't want used, Clark Custom in Louisiana still builds them. There are several others.

Oh, I would definitely buy used. There have been some crazy deals on these since the sellers don't know what they're worth.

Thanks! I found the Mojo and Clark websites after posting the thread so yes, I'll be buying used! I didn't really think anyone was offering new builds as a regular part of their business but I was obviously mistaken. I've got my eye on a couple of used ones and I'm trying to keep an eye out for "named builder" guns. Am I reading right that some of these are using 3 and 4 pound barrels?

I shot the old PPC matches for several years. I started with a stock S&W mod. 19, then went to a S&W K38. Wish I still had both! The K38 was the better especially for reloading, the Mod. 19 had recessed chambers & wadcutters tended to hang up. The K38 didn't have recessed chambers & reloaded much more smoothly.

I've heard those Clark guns are pretty slick, never held one myself though.

Joe S's thread reminded me of this thread again and started me digging around GB. Can anyone ID the rib on this one: www.gunbroker.com/item/817506591It doesn't really look like there's any improvement over the factory sights so I'm not sure I understand the purpose of that set up.

Very peculiar set up. The builder had a special purpose in mind, but I doubt it was PPC competition. Sights were usually adjusted for each yardage. Fixed sights would be a disadvantage. Interesting though. Thanks for the link.

Strictly a guess, but since it was obviously not set up just for PPC, I'm thinking one of two options: The builder wanted a videogame/movie gun but said i don't need $100+ sights. Or The builder/seller is a budding gunsmith who made this for school. I've seen a few people around the net post stuff like that for smithing school, try out some stuff like threading, crowning, cutting dove tail, refinishing, etc.
