I am fascinated by this caliber and admittedly would love to own one. Is the Ruger Maximum frame the only platform it can be built on? Just curious as the are becoming more rare and more expensive.

You can do it on a Seville and Dan Wessons chambered in the SuperMag cartridges. You could also use the long BFR I suppose and an X-frame Smith & Wesson would be doable. IMHO, the Ruger Maximum is the gun for the conversion. Just a reminder:

I do like mine, it's going pronghorn hunting in a week. Although a bit much for pronghorn, it is plenty accurate, and will be its first blood if I'm lucky.

I used my 41 caliber version on my antelope 2 years ago and it worked great.

IMHO, the Ruger Maximum is the gun for the conversion. Just a reminder: Likely true, but a Ruger Bisley grip frame won't graft onto one of them nearly as a easy as it will to a Ruger Max. I think doing anything other than a Ruger Max will be more expensive. In my opinion, the base gun is not that expensive in the scope of the conversion project. My 5 shot maximum base guns on the two most recent 5 shot conversions have run about 25% of the project total. ($700 less cylinders) Even if you have to spend a grand, you can get back $150 on the cylinder right away. Grip frame, hammer and trigger for another $125. $40 for the barrel. You can also sell the scope and mount on this one for a little more www.gunbroker.com/item/589865809I have personally done my part to make the Ruger max more rare and expensive. I have had 5 converted to other calibers. Collectors, you are welcome.

I thought one of the big smiths was making there own stretch frames, maybe not anymore? I know it's a necessary evil at this point, but I hate seeing them used for conversions, they don't make max's anymore. Now instead of finding them for $400-$500, their double that.

My base gun was less than 25% of the total - I don't feel bad about it. I do think that Gary Reeder was/is making his own stretch frames.....but that's a thought, not a fact!

Reeder was getting his own stretch frame but I believe ran into supply issues.

Reeder was getting his own stretch frame but I believe ran into supply issues. I thought that's who it was. That is toooo common in this industry regarding small outfits.

I have a while before I could afford to start this project, so there's plenty of time to plan. I was considering if there was a way to do a BFR conversion as I thought that might be fun.

I spoke with Gary Reeder last week and he said that to him the Ruger Maximum frame ia not a preference as it isn't as strong as he'd like. He said the X-Frame is doable, but expensive. Also, due to the weight, it's best used as a boat-anchor. Something tells me he's not an X-Frame fan. He said a BFR is certainly doable or his own stretch frame.
I tried calling Jack for his thoughts but got no answer. Just wanted to share with everyone.

I don't believe I've ever heard of anyone breaking their Ruger based 500 Max. If Whit and Lee haven't busted theirs, I don't think any of us mere mortals have anything to worry about!
S&W "X" actually might make a pretty good boat anchor but is overkill for a 500 Max.
I still want to shoot "Hellboy"!!!

how far behind the 500 S&W is the 500 Max???
I do shoot 50 AE... & in fact, would like to rework the cylinder on my custom 5 shot 50 A.E. Super Blackhawk, to 500 Special ( 500 S&W cases cut to fit the cylinder length ) so I could used a rimmed case & get a better crimp than is doable with the AE cases...
