so I was surfing the net, saw that magnum research has made "updates" to the bfr.. let's see now, new rear sight, new rear hammer and a switch from pachmayr to Hogue for the standard grip... at www.magnumresearch.com/MRI-news.asp#BFR2016 from the website details the changes... maybe i'm just a crusty old phart, but the new hammer design has really got me scratching my head! ref the grips - I don't care, grips are always a subjective thing and I had to go to jack huntington for his mod on my 475 ("big-ish" hands). their website is a bit confusing but if you scroll around you'll find that the 45 colt, the 480/475 and the 500jrh are still listed: www.magnumresearch.com/Firearms/Magnum-Research-500-JRH-Revolver-55-inch-Barrel.aspjust wish now that I had bought a couple more of jim stroh's front sights! comments? pile on!!

The grip is kinda cool, but I agree on the hammer... WTF were they thinking?
Just a note, my BFR's grips say "Uncle Mike's" on the inside not Pachmyar. I prefer the Hogue SBH grip myself. To each their own.

That hammer has kept me from getting one. I had saved up for a BFR, because I wanted a good gun that wouldn't have to go immediately to the gunsmith like my Ruger. With that hammer, it would have to go visit the smith... That hammer is not for me. If they change again, for the better, I might get back on board. I might anyway eventually, but I'm going to give them time to fix the hammer first. I like them otherwise, and find the new sights and grip appealing.

a two part answer to both posts:
- ref the sbh grip - yes, it can be done and done pretty fairly for a field gun - I did just that for my bfr before giving it to jrh for the mod. money well spent..
- ref the hammer - while the gun was at jrh, I had jack's team install a ss bisley hammer (I supplied) and it worked out very well indeed - the big tip here - the internals are a spitting image of the ruger Blackhawk/sbh line)..

In the the press article they seem awfully proud of their new hammer. Agree on preferring the aesthetics of the old design but it is hard to imagine them going back now.

"hard to imagine them going back now"
you bet - manufacturers almost seem committed to failing rather than admit bad ideas...
makes you wonder who at magnum research polled likely customers - if at all.....

I purchased a 500 S&W BFR earlier in the year and unfortunately it had the new style tall and thin hammer. I did not like it one bit. I much prefer the Super Blackhawk style hammer and was quite bummed about it. I no longer have the gun, wouldn't mind having another but I strongly dislike the new hammer.

Can you buy the older style hammer and retrofit it? I don't like the new hammer either. Maybe order one with the understanding that if they can not put the old hammer in it you will not accept it. The hammer that I like the best is the Super Blackhawk. I don't care for Bisley hammer and I don't like the Bisley grip frame either. Just my opinion. I like the Hunter style GF the best. I wish it came in Blue also. I hope everyone is having a nice Holiday Weekend. Ron

I replaced the high spur hammer with a Super Blackhawk hammer I got from Brownell's. Neededed some grinding to eliminate built in creep. See David Bradshaw's threads this forum.

That 45Colt-410 vented rib could be a contender for the Ugly Gun Award. Is it a wannabe shotgun or a wannabe revolver?

I don't get it either, but they are wildly popular.

Try shooting clay birds with a TC Contender.. The 4 extra shots of the BFR come in handy!

Our S&W Governor is the most carried revolver on our property. It is usually only loaded with #7 shot in all six cylinders. My wife loves it so much I had to buy her a belt and holster so she could carry it when doing yard and garden work. Our Governor has probably killed more critters than any other revolver I own.
