I live in West Virginia (please no country boy statements on this one). As of June 1st. it is became legal to CCW without a permit. Only rules are 21 or older not a felon and you must not carry out of State. I been always aware that Residents can open carry, but you never saw any one doing it. I have had a CCW for over 14 years and I always try to see if other people are packen. It's not often that I see it happen. But this weekend I was at a public function and noticed 3 people that were carrying. But that was the first time I saw anyone open carry in a town of about 38,000. What do you people think?

I think you ought to quit worrying about it and just enjoy your freedom.

I think it's better to have the element of surprise, and that open carry makes you a first target

I think it's better to have the element of surprise, and that open carry makes you a first target I agree when I lived in NYS, I concealed carried for over 20 years, the main reason it works for cutting crime is the scums bags don't know if I grabbing my wallet or a 1911
Open carry can deter as well but can also make you a target it all depends on the situation. I haven't gone for my TX CCW bc one I don't feel I need it here it's no NY and NY was one of the first states to ever offer CCW licenses also still one of the hardest to get one in, its a may issue state not shall issue, so I am kinda put off that I have to go through everything again just to get one here in this shall issue state and some other states see an NY permit and just hand you theirs bc of the nature of NY background checks and the whole lengthy and expensive process to get one there.

We have open carry here and I've seen a handful of people doing it in public before. Me personally, I only do it from my house to a gun range since most people in those locations are also carrying a firearm. When I see it at any other store it sticks out but doesn't bother me. I feel like it attracts attention so I generally steer clear, if I carry it's usually well concealed.

In my neck of the woods [Raleigh Co. WV] I see very few who open carry in the public place. I see more open carry in the gun shops than anywhere else. I don't carry open unless I'm out knocking around away from people.

It has been my understanding that Mo has always been an open carry state. I live in a very rural part of the state and happened to open carry my 480 SRH one time when checking in a deer, I used it to kill the deer and never bothered to take the gun belt off. Good or bad you are the center of everyones attention. I really don't appreciate people much less attention so I never "carried" until I got my CCW and now never unless its concealed.

Kudos on your laws getting changed in WV. Here in NC,,, we too have had Open Carry for many years. For a long time, you rarely saw anyone carrying. In fact, one time, a buddy of mine was in a store, OC, and the owner called the police. My buddy finished shopping, was about to leave when the LEO arrived. No guns drawn, no SWAT etc. Just a polite conversation with the LEO & then the LEO went in & explained the law to the store owner. Yet, in recent years, with more focus on CCW, AND the perceived rise in public shootings, (I say perceived as the actual numbers are down, but the media hysteria has made it seem worse) I have noticed more folks carrying open. Quite a bit more. I have OCed a lot over the years w/o incident, and I still do. I also carry CCW when I want to. A lot has to do with the type of clothing, the places I'm going, and the firearm I'm carrying. I was raised to "Tuck in that shirt" as a sign of proper dress. I live in the south where it is hot in the summer. I wear shorts & T-shirts daily. I tuck in my shirt. Adding a CCW holster, and a covering piece of clothing is too hot. Wearing a gun under my T-shirt will print. Drawing a handgun from under a tucked shirt is slow. Add in that I'm often in & out of my truck in places where it's not necessary to carry. (On the job for example.) So I use a sturdy belt, and just do a tuck-in of the gun into my belt, between the shorts, and my tucked in T-shirt. It rides easily, is easily drawn, and accessible. However, if I'm going someplace that may appear less than safe, I go concealed.
My point is that there is no "One size fits all" answer. I'm just glad you now have the laws that allow you to carry CCW w/o stupid papaerwork & such.

Concealed carry has only been a legal option in Wisconsin since 2011, where open carry has always been legal, though it hasn't been widely known until recently. And even then not SO widely known.
I live and work in Milwaukee and own properties in remote areas in the Northern part of the state (very near the UP of Michigan). One of them is right next to a 900 acre piece of land that is open to the public.
I have open carried for decades when 'up North'. I regularly see large black bear tracks 100-200 feet from my place there. But that isn't what concerned me. I was more put off by the characters I would see going into the public land to party or do whatever.
Just about every year there is a large pot growing operation discovered in one of the three counties I have land in, usually run by armed Mexican nationals.
I have open carried from time to time even in Milwaukee since Concealed Carry has been legal, but generally much prefer concealed.
In the last week I have seen three people open carrying in Milwaukee, And every time I noticed the person before I noticed the gun on their hip. They were all drawing attention to themselves and trying to be noticed. It made me embarrassed when I saw they were open carrying.
There may have well been a dozen other people open carrying around me in that time who didn't draw attention to themselves, but the ones I noticed were generally embarrassing themselves in public.
My point really is, I have no issue with open carry as long as someone isn't doing it for the attention.

I OC'd a few times in NH before I got the NH CCW license, and only once since. I live in NY and we must CC here. I always complained about it until I actually gave it a good deal of thought. CCW won't make me a mark/target right off the bat (hopefully) and gives me the advantage of a surprise attack if it's ever needed (hopefully Not) The people like "yetiman" described above, drawing attention to themselves NEED a Good Swift Kick in the Ass! Imho We Don't Need that type of attention drawn on to us legal CCW holders!!! Just plain STUPID!!! BigBore44

Open carry tells me the person can shoot. If I was a bad guy I would look somewhere else for easy target. Only in times I'm wearing a coat fall, winter and spring is my gun hid. I also open carry long guns walking out of town to hunt.

I live in Pahrump, Nevada. You see a lot of people that open carry. They made it easier to get a CCW permit than it used to be and some of the people that used to carry open now carry consceald. I even see women walking around open carrying. I went into McDonalds the other day and there was 2 woman that were Packing. Somebody asked them if they were some kind of police and they said they weren't and they had the right to open carry. Pahrump is about 60 miles over the hill from Las Vegas. It is in Nye county and Las Vegas is in Clark county. In Arizona you don't need a CCW. I am a trucker and I asked a Phoenix police officer if you were from out of state are you allowed to carry conseald he said you could. I said how about the the people that are illegally here and he said you have to be legally in this country. Some of the truck stops have off duty Phoenix Police for guards. They are in their uniforms. Most of the places, especially industrial areas are pretty bad now. A gun is like an American Express Card. DON'T Leave Home Without IT. Everybody Have A Great Day. Ron
