I tried to give him his prize as I was leaving for work, just before 1st light... but all I had on me was my little no frills TCP & after wasting a magazine full of personal defense cartridges I gave the MRS a call, to have her give the doggie his prize via the 17 Mach 2 after she got up & it was a little lighter outside...
that little rifle has dispensed with quite a few coons over the last several years... & this outside dog has gotten good at protecting the hen house... 2 years ago he had 5 adult raccoons in the same tree in one night, I think that year we shot 15-16 of them over the summer...
they seem to have been growing in numbers around here lately... we were at the state park 4-5 miles from our farm last summer, & the ranger was warning about gangs of raccoons that were brazenly going from camp site to camp site stealing everything off the picnic tables, even while people were sitting at the tables, & even before it would get dark...
you guys have a coon problem around where you live???

We certainly have a large population of them in the woods behind our property. They used to be all through our yard and across the porch, up the side of the house and looking into the upstairs windows at us. They didn't care about me but were afraid of my wife.
The Brittany tipped the scales. Since we got her, we haven't had any problems. The 'coons have, though... she's treed a number of them and took a bite out of the haunch of a big male. His piteous wailing as he scrambled for his life stunned our boys, but delighted my wife an me.
I'd shoot 'em but live adjacent to the University and the attendant hand wringers. So we let the pooches do our talking for us.

Stop shooting them! I make my living as an Animal Damage Control Agent. Send them coons to the city folks who love to pay me to get rid of them! Seriously, sounds like you have things under control & a good dog!

I've killed 2 raccoons here over the last 19yrs that I am sure were rabid. Seems population is up a bit, but not as bad as you guys are describing. Boys aren't running traplines anymore, no bubba at the end the road with a run full'a hounds, etc.. Stay safe.

MRS got another in the big Walnut tree in the front yard, last night... was stuck in the crotch of a big branch... poor doggie has been laying under that tree ever since... hope the breeze blows it down before the poor dog starves to death
