Markbo, I've made my own arrangements, but with frequent contact with outfitters, etc. Steve Turner's Travel company can be very helpful, and there is a gun clearing service in South Africa that can be very helpful, although I've not personally used them. They didn't exist the last time I hunted in that country. Regarding your rifles, I would recommend the .300 Mag. for the animals you mention.

There are several gun clearing outfits in RSA, I have used Afton Guest House both as an overnighter and for help going thru SAPS. It cost about $100 and worth every dime. They scoot you thru SAPS and on to your next flight or overnight services whichever is needed. They can be a huge help filling out the SAPS forms and doing all that BS before you arrive. Nowadays you will find that the gun stuff on that end is easier than on this end, which is sad but the way it is.

Either will work fine for those critters, I have hunted both. You have some questions still to ask yourself. Will hunting behind a often, high fenced acreage bother you? Most ranches in RSA will be thus, though you wont necessarily be next to one all the time but they are a fact of life in RSA in most cases, though the ranches are usually thousands of acres large. Namibia less so, though they have them too. Namibia tends to be a bit more arid in most areas. For me, I decided not to let fences bother me with the caveat that I would not shoot a critter with a fence behind him or in any way appearing to block his retreat. This situation never occurred so its moot but that was my limit. Sometimes you will be near farm houses on guest ranches and maybe even see them while in the field on a stalk. This can be a little unnerving for some. Once we were hunting bushbuck and the tracker was losing his mind in the back of the LC, telling us a monster buck was just near the farmhouse we just passed. My PH says lets go see. I said too close to the house, no way. He said, they don't care, to which I said, well I do, move on. The poor tracker was nearly apoplectic! We drove down the road a mile or so and jumped another buck that was probably not as big as the one I passed on but there were no farms in sight when I shot him near dusk. I prize him very much. This is where the research gets fun and you will along the way find some things you like and some you don't. Its part of the reason I highly recommend joining the forum I mentioned above, as all of these questions are covered in one thread or another with often "high" debate to follow.

My hunting buddy Fred Smith, owner of Bullberry Barrel Works of Hurricane, Utah & I were fortunate enough to be hunting with the President of the South African Handgunners Association when we went & we had a great Safari. We hunted the bush veld country just a few miles from the border of Botswana & took Zebra, Impala, Waterbuck, Blue Wildebeest Kudu & I also shot 3 Warthogs, all were taken with handguns. We had a great time & 2 groups from my home town have been back twice, sadly the farm has since been sold to a Spaniard. For plains game any of the calibers you mentioned will work with good bullets & placement. As mentioned, just do your homework & go as soon as you can, its changing all the time. Dick Great write up as always Dick...but just to be clear. You have hunted with folks from Utah? Are they anything like the Utah fisherman...I think I am digressing... Sorry for the Hijack Markbo!

Curt, the one day we spent along the Limpopo river there were some locals fishing & a couple of them were pretty light skinned, I figured they had to be Utah fishermen & was all for running a few stray shots from my FA 475 over that way to see if they could swim! Fred, being from Utah didn't think that was very sporting so he talked me out of it.....darn, Crocs gotta eat too!

Just make sure you contract a service to help bring your handguns into South Africa.....
