.357 Maximum prototype SRM-2 was fitted with ten, 10-1/2" barrels, with twists ranging from 1:10 to 1:60. Ruger drilled & tapped topstrap for the Leupold BH/SBH mount, and attached a Leupold LER 4x28mm scope. Target shot in Vermont with 1:14" twist @ 100 meters.
The seven prototype Maximums were serial numbered SRM-1 through SRM-7. Only SRM-2 was scoped. Six shots @ 100 meters, sandbag.
Among rifle bullets favored in Bradshaw's handloads, Hornady .358 200 grain Round Nose. Winchester 680 ball powder, slower than 296/H110, proved a propellant conducive to smooth pressure and accuracy with heavy bullets. Winchester dropped 680. Accurate Arms introduced 1680, which serves as a lateral substitute. Original Remington experimental Maximum ammo was loaded in 1.490-inch case for converted Blackhawk. David trimmed 1.490" case to 1.300" to roll crimp cannelure of 200 RN. Once 1.605" brass became available, David tried both roll crimp and profile crimp on ogive. Both ogive crimps worked----David preferred roll crimp for slightly tighter ES----rendering trimmed brass unnecessary.
While bulk of target work for development of the .357 Maximum took place at 100 yards, substantial lead was thrown at at 100 meters, 200 yards, and 200 meters. Almost no shooting was done at 50 yards, except for initial sight dope. Ruger senior shot SRM-2 very well at 100 yards.Bill, Jr., shot the spectrum of guns, at various distances, mostly 100 yds.
Blackhawk Maximum number 6 exemplifies earliest production with 10-1/2" bull barrel, .100-inch target front and .090-inch notch rear sights, and a short 11-degree forcing cone.
NIB .357 Maximum 00006 belongs to Ben "Bear Man" Kilham. Plain walnut Super Blackhawk grips are standard
Prefix "600" in serial number indicates Blackhawk Maximum model.
